Review
Two weeks ago, Joshua Ray continued our series
Two Gates, Two Trees, Two Confessions
Introduction
Two Builders
Remember, this is Sermon
What comes at the end of a Sermon
A call to decision and commitment
Today’s passage is the the end of the end, a summary call to respond to the whole of the Sermon.
Today’s Passage also provides Matthew’s closing comment’s on Jesus’ Sermon
Not any less Jesus’ Words
These Word’s tie the whole Sermon into what Matthew included the details that he did. They tell how it fits into the book.
Let’s look together at the passage.
Transition
Matthew 7:24 ESV
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

I. The wise person does not just hear Jesus’ words but does them.

What are Jesus’ words?
Jesus’ Words are His sermon.
He summarizes them in verse 12
Matthew 7:12 ESV
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Transition

II. The wise person will withstand the storms of life.

Matthew 7:25 ESV
And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
Build your life on Jesus the rock
Transition
Let’s look at the foolish person now.
Matthew 7:26–27 ESV
26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

III. The foolish person hears Jesus but ignores Him and their life is destroyed.

Don’t be the foolish person
Transition
Matthew now adds a short, but incredibly important note.
Matthew 7:28–29 ESV
28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
Why did Matthew include the teaching on the Sermon on the Mount?
Look back with me to the beginning of the Sermon
Matthew 5:1–2 ESV
1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
Jesus began by teaching His inner circle
Notice that he ultimately ended up with the crowds still listening
Matthew 7:28 ESV
28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching,
So, back to the question,
Why did Matthew include the teaching on the Sermon on the Mount?
What did Jesus teach about?
The kingdom (Kingdom values)
How to be a citizen
That He is the fulfillment of the law
That the law, as taught by the religious leaders, was not sufficient to save them
They they must be perfect
That they can’t live up to the standard of perfection
That simple obedience is not enough
That the gate to follow Jesus is narrow

Ultimately, Matthew included Jesus’ sermon to teach that the only way to be a part of the kingdom is to build your house on the Rock, Jesus.

IV. Jesus is the King of the Kingdom and is the only one who can teach with authority.

Matthew 7:29 ESV
29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
Applications:
Treat others as you would like to be treated (Be wise)
Don’t ignore the truth of Jesus (Don’t be foolish)
Trust in the King, who is the only way to partake of the kingdom!
