PSALM CONSTRUCTION

Jewish tradition says that this psalm was written to commemorate David’s returning the ark to Jerusalem (1 Chron. 13–15). It was probably sung by different choirs and soloists, each answering the other. The choir would sing vv. 1–2, a voice would respond with v. 3, and then another voice would answer with v. 4. Then the chorus would sing vv. 5–6. As the people entered the gates of the city, the chorus would sing out vv. 8–9, and the voice would ask again, “Who is this king of glory?” Then the entire group would shout, “The Lord of hosts! He is the king of glory!” What a wonderful spectacle it must have been!

THE RETURN OF THE ARK - RETURN OF THE PRESENCE (MANIFEST PRESENCE) OF THE LORD)
IT SEEMS AS IF ONE COULD NOT LIFET HIS VOICE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION OF THE PSALM “WHO IS THE KING OF GLORY” WITHOUT THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD.

I. HE HAS A RIGHTFUL CLAIM ON ALL THINGS (verses 1, 2)

GOD KNOWS THE EARTH (God is sovreign over it)
nothing happens without His willing that that to happen
GOD KNOWS YOU
nothing happens to you without his willing it to take place

II. HE GIVES RIGHTEOUS DEMANDS FOR ALL PEOPLE (verses 3-6)

We do what we do because we are who we are

1. He demands a holiness of Life (v. 4a)

Proverbs 20:9 ESV
Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin”?

2. He demands of holiness of longing. (v. 4b)

3. He demands of holiness of language (v. 4c)

Who can say that they are that person?
1. WHO CAN SAY THAT THEIR HANDS ARE CLEAN AND THEIR HEART IS PURE?
2. WHO CAN SAY THAT THEY LOVE THE LORD WITH THE TOTALITY OF THEIR BEING AND AFFECTIONS?
3. WH CAN SAY THAT THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN DECEITFUL?
NONE!
BUT JESUS CAN

III. HE WILL RETURN WITH RADICAL GLORY (verses 7-11)

NOW THEY ARE AT THE GATE - THEY CALL OUT - LIFT UP YOUR HEADS OH GATES… THAT THE KING OF GLORY MAY COME IT
