Learning the Gospel from Matthew
Review:
Audience?
Matthew reached at least two groups of Jews: they are the unbelieving Jews, & the Jewish Christians.
Purpose:
Jewish Christians
Among other roles, Matthew helps link Jesus of Nazareth to the fulfillment of Old Testament prophesies.
Genealogy:
Matthew connects Jesus to what two Hebrew patriarchs?
They are: Abraham & David
Matthew broke protocol by including four women in his genealogy
Goal / Accomplishment
Matthew has established to his readers that Jesus of Nazareth could be Israel’s Messiah-King.
Divine Genealogy
In regards to the virgin birth, Matthew emphasized the role of the Holy Spirit over the role of Mary.
Review:
In chapter three, Matthew calls John the Baptist as a witness that Jesus could be Israel’s Messiah-King.
John calls his audience to repentance
Repentance is a choice John wants his audience to make!
Learning the Gospel from Matthew
Matthew begins introducing aspects of the gospel!
Two prominent Jewish groups are named in this verse, they are: the Pharisees & the Sadducees.
This is the first time either of these groups are mentioned in the Bible.
Pharisees
Names means separated ones
one of the three leading parties of the N.T.
They recognized two authoritative sources:
Written law
Oral law
Written Law
Law handed down by Moses
Oral Law
traditions handed down by religious teachers
Sadducees
Names means righteous
one of the three leading parties of the N.T.
Recognized only one authoritative source:
Written law handed down by Moses
Contrasting the two parties:
Pharisees:
Believed in the supernatural (miracles, angels, resurrection, etc.)
Sadducees
Rejected the supernatural
Pharisees fit the role of legalist
Sadducees fit the role of liberals
Question:
Which group was primarily of the priestly office, and controlled the temple during Herod’s reign?
Sadducees
Saddu
Take another look
What is your motive?
John challenged the motive of the Pharisees and Sadducees who came to be baptized by him.
He saw through the insincerity and refused to baptize the unless they produced evidence of repentance
He challenged their faith that a blood relation to Abraham could save them from the wrath of God (vr9).
God raised up children to Abraham out of the deadness of Sarah’s womb; He could do the same with stones if He desired.
Warning:
Judgment comes to those who have no genuine fruit
Mt 3
John points his audience to the role of Messiah-King as one who brings judgment upon those who are not the true children of God!
Conclusion
Matthew has provided a strong argument that Jesus of Nazareth could be Israel’s Messiah-King
Now he points his audience back to the message of John the Baptist
If Jesus is the Messiah-King then He will judge the world, and they must repent
