When something is precious to you how do you treat it?
protect it?
It was his birthday today and he could not wait to get home. He had been waiting for this day for about 3 months since he saw the commercials. The little box sat on his lap seeming to vibrate slightly as the car drove down the road. “How’s it going back there?” says dad, “shhh, he’s sleeping” is the reply. As they get home and he quietly walks into the house he goes straight to the couch and gently sets down the little cardboard box. He peaks through the little air holes in the lid and holds his breath as he gazes down. The boy quietly opens the lid to the box. Inside the box pressed against the wall is the care instructions, the boy pulls them out and begins to read. The care instructions covers everything the boy needs to know about his new pet. How to care for it, suggestions on training, even a small list of names to get the creative juices flowing. The rest of the afternoon the boy is anchored to his room quietly playing with his new pet. “Time for dinner” mom says and the boy finally emerges holding his precious new friend. After dinner mom tells him it is time to get ready for bed. As the boy brushes his teeth he never takes his eyes off his little buddy wanting to make sure that he does not roll off the bathroom countertop. “Can he sleep in my bed tonight dad?” ask the boy “of course!” replies dad. Upon hearing this the boy picks up his friend and runs off to his room again. As mom comes to tuck him in the boy notifies her that dad said they could sleep together tonight. “Thats good honey” says mom “have you decided on a name for him yet?” she asks. “Yes, I’m gonna call him pebbles” he grins up to her. “I think that is a perfect name for your new pet rock” mom says lovingly as she kisses him goodnight.
Didn’t see that coming did you!?
Have you all heard of pet rocks before?
1975/76 - 32pg manual - 1.5 million sold
How many of you had a pet rock as a kid?
How do we know this kid loved his pet rock?
We know because of the love and care he ascribed to it.
Have you ever loved and cherished something like that?
How many of you have ever seen shows like antiques road show? or American pickers? or something like that?
Have you ever seen an episode where someone got really disappointed by one of their items?
VIDEO
Have you ever been really disappointed by something?
We are most disappointed when we trade something great for something less so, yet we find ourselves doing just that, more often then we would like to admit.

Theme
Esau carelessly gives up the greater for the lesser.
Pray
God as we seek to look into your Word today we can so easily be tempted to look at stories like this and cast judgement on others. Give us humility and insight today as we will see ourselves so plainly in this text. Help us then to apply this word to our own lives as we invite your Spirit to come and minister in us.

THE SERMON BODY
THE SERMON BODY
29 Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) 31 Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” 32 Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” 33 Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Gen 25.29-
vv 29
Jacob - working indoors
stew - boiled pottage
Esau - working outdoors
exhausted - faint with hunger
perhaps failed at the hunt
When are you most often tempted to Sin against God?
When you are tired
When you are hungry
When you don’t get your way
vv 30
Red Stew - x2 = “ha adom”
red stuff?
Edom = sounds like red
Esau is a man like us who is driven by his appetites. = What happens when we do not practice mastery over them?
vv 31
Jacob wastes no time!
now = today - the whole thing over to me right now!
birthright = right of the first born son
= double portion of all father has
but he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the unloved, by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the firstfruits of his strength. The right of the firstborn is his.
16 then on the day when he assigns his possessions as an inheritance to his sons, he may not treat the son of the loved as the firstborn in preference to the son of the unloved, who is the firstborn, 17 but he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the unloved, by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the firstfruits of his strength. The right of the firstborn is his.
Deut 21.
Let us seek to waste no time when it comes to serving the LORD!
1 Chr 5:1, 2
1 The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s couch, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, so that he could not be enrolled as the oldest son; 2 though Judah became strong among his brothers and a chief came from him, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph),
1 Chr
vv 32
What good is an inheritance to a dead man?
We do what we do because we want what we want.
What sins so easily entangle you?
Pride
self
family
Lust
Greed
Anger
Complacency
Comfort
We like Esau can so easily lose sight of what is most important when we fail to fix our eyes upon it.
vv 33
Swear = make an oath
fulfillment of vv 23 prophecy for Jacob
16 For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation.
vv 34
Bread & Stew
Ate & Drank & Rose & Went
= she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
English Standard Version Chapter 3
she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
his way...
thus he despised his birthright!
When you sin, do you repent?
The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s couch, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, so that he could not be enrolled as the oldest son; though Judah became strong among his brothers and a chief came from him, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph),
Is repentance a character trait you cultivate?
1 Chr 5.
How quickly after you sin do you seek to repent?
Esau’s hardness
beware!!!!
17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.
What is our natural birthright, what birthright do we deserve?
According to scripture we were born sinners, enemies of God
Because we were born into sin our birthright is damnation
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Because we were born into sin our birthright is damnation
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? There is not one.
20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
Eze
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Jesus explains how to escape this fate...
we must be reborn!!
3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Jesus & Nicodemus
Pharisee
By night
1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

How?
10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things?
Jesus explains!
Gospel!

Jesus said we must be reborn through faith in Him!

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Have you been born again?
If no = today
If YES
we have a new birthright!
imperishable / undefiled / unfading / eternal inheritance
guarded by God / waiting to be revealed
causing rejoicing / filled with inexpressible joy
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
Do you despise your birthright?
This was much more then a car was it not?
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
1 Jhn 3.4
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
One day Jacob was inside cooking soup for supper later that night but his brother Esau came home early from a hard days work. Esau was tired and hungry after working all day and so he asked Jacob to give him some of the soup right then. Jacob said, “I’ll tell you what, I’ll give you some soup if you give me your car.” Esau replied “I am starving bro, what good is a car to someone who is starving to death?” Jacob said “give me the title then.” So Esau signed over to Jacob the title of his car. Jacob then gave Esau his meal. After Esau ate his meal he got up and left without another word. That is how we know that Esau didn’t really care about his car.
If you cherish your birthright..
Did Esau care very much about his car?

We cherish and nurture that which we love and we discard that which we despise.
Discard your wicked ways and repent
Cherish and nurture the spirit which brings us life
Be brief.
Cherish and nurture the spirit which brings us life
Don’t introduce new material.
15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; 16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.
18 Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the Lord our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit,

CLOSE
God our Father in heaven we are surrounded by many things that seek to steal our attentions and affections away from you. We face an onslaught of temptation seeking to steal our love away from you on to the things that are temporal and will never fully satisfy. Their promises are lies and only end in death. Protect us we pray. Guide us we beg you. Give us the wisdom to seek what cannot be lost, stollen or destroyed. Help us to put of the lesser for the greater, we want you LORD. We need you God. The Spirit is willing but the body is weak, please we beg you be our strength to pursue you, cling to you, seek you and put off all else.

COMMUNION
What it stands for
= d23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Warning
= 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
Communion Verses
= Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”
= And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
COMMUNION TOGETHER
Fellowship With Each Other
= 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
