The church at Corinth was not only a divided church, but it was a church that was filled with immorality.
As we look at this passage it become somewhat clear that many in the church knew about the immorality and refused to confront it.
As we read think about the church in America today.
Sexual Immorality
Paul had received reports that there was sexual immorality in the church at Corinth. And it was NOT good.
1 Corinthians 5:1–2 NIV84
1It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: A man has his father’s wife. 2And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this?
1 Corinthians 5:1-
A. Their sexual immorality was worse than the pagans immorality.
The word translated “sexual immorality” is the Greek word “porneia” from which we get our English word pornography.
B. In this case there was a man who had taken his father’s wife.
C. The big problem was the church’s pride!
The church was apparently boasting that they were so open minded that even the sexually immoral could be a member in good standing.
D. Rather than proud, they should have grief!
E. The offender should have been put out of the fellowship.
