Dear Congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,
When you think of the book of Daniel - two things come to mind - story of moralism ; end times prophesy. This is indeed roughtly the structure of this book. But how are do these two parts hang together - what is the theme - the message unites them - not written simply as Dare to be Like Daniel Story, not written for 1% of Christians who will live in the very end times. Given back then and given now, given to God’s people through ages in the form of this story -embedded inhistory -to reveal the Messiah, His very real and eternal kingdom and how we are to live for Him and His kingdom until it comes in fulness in the midst of a real big struggle - in our world too. Particular attentionto believers living in an hostile clture, particularly young people, particular sufferers, but also those climbing social ladder in this kingdom of the world!
Key Truth: You must Live with a spiritual perspective on the present, compelled by the hope of Christ’s Kingdom-future!
compelled by the hope of Christ’s Kingdom-future!
Consider how much you need this truth, when in the present you suffer:
Pierce Pettis.. When you start to doubt if God exists. .. confounded by the evidence… When your light burns so dim… when your chances seem so slim… and you swear you don’t believe in Him… When you rise up just to fall again. God believe in you. Desserted by your closest friends… when you’re betrayed with a kiss, and you turn your cheek to another fist.... when you’re so ashamed that you could die, and you can’t do right even though you try ; Blessed are the one whogireve, thoseones who morn and the ones who who bleeed, In sorrow you sow but in joy you’ll reap.. God believe in you.
Daniel, Hannaniah, Mishael, and Azariah - lived through a holocaust - imagine a Jew surviving death camps coming out at the end of the war. A bit like what happened in first wave of exiles in 605. JII had rebelled and switched to Egypt - battle of Carcmesh - decive defeat, now op up operation - but doesn’t want all out war - sets up a puppet king, takes Jehoaikim, and first wave are the royal princes, welleducated … create a forced brain drain… but perhaps parents killed, temple desecrated… you can bet that they doubted there names were true:
So many like them, You are like them as live in our increasingly godless society - absorbed - name Christian really a reality … you need these stories to show how to live but what glorious hope of the kingdom even where we live from Babylon.
But there is another reason you need this message of the book of Daniel, not just when life falling off the rails personally, but when you are a social climber, when things going well for you in Babylon - how many of you in the kingdom of this world - have more than enough food, don’t worry about next month- home - even provided for children, found gainful employment - so easy to forget about Christ, vision of His kingdom and to live for that - need to know that God believes in His people - has a plan, will not only deliver them, but he will guide them, even more soveriegnly in control of all things even thee nations - to see His kingdom of grace triumph. Can you imagine all Daniel and his three friends experienced at the hands of Neb - and in their lifetime lived to see Babylon - and its head humbled to acknowledge God’s kingdom… Believe it in your lifetime, in your family, in your reseidence at your universty, place of work, in this nation. Even more so you and I who have the fulfillment of the Kingdom inn Christ, mustlearn how to live in our present and with an even greater hope for the future!
A. Get a big spiritual perspective on your present
The book of Daniel begins by giving dates, but not just history, theological interpretation of the times and events of our lives! Really begs you to ask the Do you believe that God is sovereign - his providence is meticulous - both the good and the bad, every little detail - under His reign and control - doesn’t create evilis not the author of suffering; yet is in control and benseverything in response to evil to work for His good purposes! Need a persepective on days , year and time inhistory given, that God has aplna for it - right now in oyru life andmine, and this time at Covenant church - it counts for eternity - Daniel goingto show that 7x7 = 49 x10 years before this time bringing wrath of God on nation - not keep Sabbath - Jubileee.
Since the coming out of Egypt: thence to their entering Canaan forty years, thence seven years to the dividing of the land, thence seven Jubilees to the first year of Samuel, in whom prophecy began, thence to this first year of the captivity seven seventies of years, 490 (ten Jubilees), thence to the return one seventy, thence to the death of Christ seven seventies more, thence to the destruction of Jerusalem forty years.
- going to show with eitulous mathermtiacl ability - that in the middle of last week of the 70 weeks - the Anointed one would be cut off - exactly from this date here of the third year of the reign of Jeohiakm - 486 1/2 years death of Christ. Now that is fasicanting prpehesies some hard to interpret - but point of all three visions at the heart of this book - is the establishment of the Anointed one f Christ’s kingdom! Do you believe that your life is also situated in this world at this time, in the Kngodmo f Christ time line!
years death of Christ
Should give you great hope if can find that vision for your life in this book. But what will enable you to get an even bigger spiritual persepective on your present is how this prphesy situates the present life of the people fo God in the midst of a comsic real conflict.
When I was in school - had to write stories - chose a conflict - man vs. man man vs. nature, manvs. himself. Detrermine the story. You know what the greatest conflict that is determining your present situation right now? Jerusalem vs. Babylon. More ancient terms house of God vs. House of Babel/Shinar, The Kingomof God vs. the Kingdom of the World, NT-end times terminology - Jerusalem Above, Zion vs. Babylon the Harlot. Christ vs. the Anti-Christ
That whole ancient conflict is conjured up for us as Daniel narrates that the King of Babylon
Daniel 1:2 ESV
And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god.
Shinar plain were the Hebrew word Babel - humanity defying God’s command (spread out) - congregataed against God - to make not His name and Kingdom famous, but to make anme for themselves. Civilization organized to twist God’s purposees, livingin selfishness - and instead of beautiful diversity - ugly confused diversity of conflict! And do you see the theolgical interpretation of the times. This happened because the Lord gave him into Babylkon’s hand. Predicted many times before - consequence to not acknowledging not worshipping God … living by his ways.
captures this perfectly - gives them over… like harending of Pharaoh’s heart - acknowledge spiritual world of godo and evil, godly, and God -ofrgetting - and God’s hand of blessing and judgment around us.
Romans 1:24–25 ESV
Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
But on this eternal persepctiv on the present notice, one more thing in v.2. With some of the vessels of the house of God. Various containers, instruments appointed by God for worship, purification, gospel liviing of his people … valued so lightly some of the kings brought foreign gods in, others gave teh treasures of the house of the Lord as payment. But now God says , you don’t value my means of grace, you won’t have them … threat of a famine of hearing the Word of God, word of forgiveness. atonement. So seemingly - Icahbod, be called not my people - seemingly as custom of ancient war, vessels brought into their gods temple - like Ark in Philistine - how Christianity shamed in the academy today - sicience, polictical correctness - are suprerior and christian symobls taken over as inferior moral story.

But is God still in contorl - Isaiah says he creates calamity, as wellas teh good times, he has a purpose. Those vessels going to be at the heart of the story - the world will use them in a drunken party - but God has other purposes and His kingdom isn’t over. Which \brings us beyond you and I getting a big spiritual perspective on the present, to how God is calling us to act in the present.
B. Keep Your Identity in the Lord
Great story of boy turned in wolf, good noble, though wild, tendencies like evil Fangs of Dang - Him and His older borther - Warden of the king, and his crippled sister Song oMaiden - sent to school bullied - but eventually respe\cted fornoble heart, and \way saved… Bullying wearing them down. On the journey to that safe haven of an an island , green hollows, mother - ask who are you, when einstead of blue eyes of her boy - yellow , snarl , ....but he came through it with himself in tac. Now each day go to school - geto n that wagon, her last wordss to them: remember who you are! (tried this, rolled eyes)

Thisi s what Martin Luther in his worst hours of despair, temptation -and in his waking hour of the day - I am a baptized Christian!
Well, it seems that Daniel and his three friends were in grave danger of the yellow glint in their eyes becomoing permanent. Beyond the overt outward actions to absorb Israel into Babyloinain Empire, and beyond the brain drain taking the best and brightest and using them almost as ransoms by conscripting them to public service - their was much more subtle agenda of the Knigdomof Babbylon and the one behind it. He took the means of grace, the vessels, but what he wanted even more was the youth - a compolete re-programing of them - indoctrination into the way babylon.
Daniel 1:4–5 ESV
youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king’s palace, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans. The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king.
This was an attack not made by force, but a gentle winning over, step-by-step - a systematic procedure - too subtle and gradual to be easily recognizalbe. And who was in charge but Ashphenaz - Does he live today - by other names - government schools - indoctrinating against the Word of God , business ethics, and personal etnertainment - slow subtle shifting of our practive, our language to the way of Babylon. Hear is a call for young people to be aware, on your gaurd! Heard one father put it this way raising his boys: 1. What is true? 2. What is valuable? What is right, ethical? Babylon, our culture has different answers - Word of God vs. realtivism My pelasure, success vs. kingdom of God; What ever works, feels good vs. Law of God! Paernts don’t be a sleep at the wheel , putting education on curise control!
But the crowning symbolic effort was their change of names: Each of their Hebrew names have Jah or God in them ---Daniel means ‘God is my judge’; Hananiah, ‘Yah has been gracious’; Mishael, ‘Who is what God is?’ and Azariah, ‘Yah has helped’.
But now core of their identiy God is editted out … Like kid off to university, or you are off to work - and livee in such a way that no witteness to God - nothing in your ideinty or practice - Like you off to work and nothing about way work, talk, what living for - shows your living for other kingdom, know a Saviour - there is no sign of any resistance from these four yet!
Now imagine how much is riding on this question of identity. What would happen if the king succeeded in turning these three sons of which tribe of Judah’s royal house into babylonians in body and spirit. What if alientated from the religion, ethos and language of their own people. Know what happens like rotten apple, first one in batch - exercise pagan influence on rest of jewish nation - God’s presence in His people, swallowed. Do you recongnize that God has you and your family positioned in this conflict and your response - it effects others, and it can will be used by God or used by Satan to infuence others.
And that brings us to the good knew of not only knowing our idenity in the Lord but acting on it!
C. Know your Identity in the Lord and Act on it!
We don’t know exactly why it was on this issue that Daniel takes his stand. levitaical laws about meat, but vegetables also from Kings hand, presumably sacrificed defile dtoo. Nothin in Leviticus forbidding such wine. There are numerous examples in intertestamental literature of Jews seeing the necessity of refraining from the food served by Gentiles (Tobit, Judith, Jubilees). It is not so much something in the food that defiles as much as it is the total program of assimilation.
The king wanted them body and soul - and Daniel says - I won’t live in my body as a Babylonian, nor can you have my soul - my outlook , and i will take astand against this public education even as to how i eat!
At this point the Babylonian government is exercising control over every aspect of their lives. They have little means to resist the forces of assimilation that are controlling them. They seize on one of the few areas where they can still exercise choice as an opportunity to preserve their distinct identity.
aND NOW AND FOR THE REST OF THE BOOK - WE KNOW he has passed the first test for how to live in the present and hope for the future. He is Daniel - My God is Judge, notBelshazar and he is beginnnginto act liek that in a way that will advance the kingdom and bring the LORD glory!
He resolves not to defile himself - Sometimes we want to be used of the Lord and see him work in amazing ways in our lives and fmilies and ew rpay about events we want to see happen. Here is a lesson that first we must be devoted to him, - first we must simpoly be aobut our duties and leave the events to him. And look what happens next- Daniel has chosen to make a stqand and will his God desert him in the conflict? Will deserrt you?
Daniel 1:9 ESV
And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs,
Do you see that? Juist like Joseph in his capticivity - faithful for years - Lrod gratns favour . Notice the manner in which he does so… in tought circtumstances, real spiritual battle… Polite witness, mindful of the cirucsrttances of Ashpenaz. DA Carson: Daniel is presented here as a model of faithful witness in the attractiveness of his life, the graciousness of his resistance (he asked, 8; Please test, 12) and the way in which his deportment evoked the favour and sympathy of the official (9) and the agreement of the guard (14).
And what is the result
Daniel 1:15 ESV
At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king’s food.
The implication is that God did this - nothing in veggie diet, not the example - but you stand for God and he will not forsake you!
And this is carried out in the sphere of their learning too. They are being trained in an alien world view,. In fact they are are being trained in according to the Bablyonian lieterature of this day in the art of diviniation - reading sign and omens… to interpret events. Astorolgy and occult. The goal was to turn them into wise advisors to a king. Noble goal - education to become that not a problem, method was. But how did these young men - gain such knowldge - look carefully at the text, they will excel by 10x the skill of all the otheBabylonians and other foreginers - how. Two things are recorded:
Daniel 1:3–4 ESV
Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility, youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king’s palace, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.
Do you see that these yougn men - maybe only 17 - already 14 years being reared in way of Torah, Law of God, wisdom of Solomon, Psalms of the Lord, and more than that as they went about their studies look what was happening:
Daniel 1:17 ESV
As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
Do you see it: daniel and his companions were given special divine gifts (17–19). Intellectual development and true success can be achieved without spiritual compromise; the godly may master and employ the learning of the ungodly. God makes foolish the wisdom of the world and perfects his strength where his people seem weakest (; cf. ). Not only is Daniel’s life and character portrayed in a manner deliberately reminiscent of Joseph; it is also a reflection of that of the coming Messiah ().
The godly in Babylon are to pursue holiness and usefulness - instead of asismulation there will be a life of frim bold, yet compassionate and genuine witness! This is the Hebrew frame which will hold the fanstastic action and future vision in Aramac that concern the nations!
There is a Devil who wants to breeathe the spirit of this world into us and our children. And therir is great God who will stand bside and with and even in those who acknwoedge His name. Before we can get to the action… must make sure have God’s perspective on our lives and that our dientity is rooted in hIm and its an idenity we will own and act upon. Do you see it these young men, seragvnt in great action and casts great vision for the future - not believers because they learned the bible in their homes in Israel - they are believers first and foremost because they love God and will ive for him in a wway of worship and service, in apriestly way - their servie their honour isn’t given to work, pleasure, prosperity of bablyon but to the lrod and His kingdom. So they start to act devoted to Him

The book of Daniel was designed to encourage the Israelites to live holy lives before God in order to maintain a good witness to those who held them captive in Babylonia. It did this by three means: First, it showed the examples of Daniel and his friends risking their lives to remain faithful to God. Second, it showed how God was totally in control of their present circumstances to care for and preserve his faithful people. Third, it showed the extent of that control through visions of the future, building present faithfulness upon future hope for restoration and fulfillment of God’s promises.

Three visions end with kingdom being established = baklanced persepctive on present and brilliant hope for future!

since the coming out of Egypt: thence to their entering Canaan forty years, thence seven years to the dividing of the land, thence seven Jubilees to the first year of Samuel, in whom prophecy began, thence to this first year of the captivity seven seventies of years, 490 (ten Jubilees), thence to the return one seventy, thence to the death of Christ seven seventies more, thence to the destruction of Jerusalem forty years.

It was denounced against Hezekiah, for showing his treasures to the king of Babylon’s ambassadors (Isa. 39:6, 7), that the treasures and the children should be carried away, and, if they had been humbled and reformed by this, hitherto the king of Babylon’s power and success should have gone, but no further. If less judgments do the work, God will not send greater; but, if not, he will heat the furnace seven times hotter. Let us see what was now done. 1. The vessels of the sanctuary were carried away, part of them, v. 2. They fondly trusted to the temple to defend them, though they went on in their iniquity. And now, to show them the vanity of that confidence, the temple is first plundered. Many of the holy vessels which used to be employed in the service of God were taken away by the king of Babylon, those of them, it is likely, which were most valuable, and he brought them as trophies of victory to the house of his god, to whom, with a blind devotion, he gave praise of his success; and having appropriated these vessels, in token of gratitude, to his god, he put them in the treasury of his temple. See the righteousness of God; his people had brought the images of other gods into his temple, and now he suffers the vessels of the temple to be carried into the treasuries of those other gods. Note, When men profane the vessels of the sanctuary with their sins it is just with God to profane them by his judgments. It is probable that the treasures of the king’s house were rifled, as was foretold, but particular mention is made of the taking away of the vessels of the sanctuary because we shall find afterwards that the profanation of them was that which filled up the measure of the Chaldeans’ iniquity, ch. 5:3. But observe, It was only part of them that went now; some were left them yet upon trial, to see if they would take the right course to prevent the carrying away of the remainder. See Jer. 27:18. 2. The children and young men, especially such as were of noble or royal extraction, that were sightly and promising, and of good natural parts, were carried away

Questions of Identity = tribe of Judah.. names … I am a prince - Andrew Peterson

and God told Hezekiah that of the children that should issue from him some should be taken and made eunuchs, or chamberlains, in the palace of the king of Babylon. The prince of the eunuchs changed the names of Daniel and his fellows, partly to show his authority over them and their subjection to him, and partly in token of their being naturalized and made Chaldeans. Their Hebrew names, which they received at their circumcision, had something of God, or Jah, in them: Daniel—God is my Judge; Hananiah—The grace of the Lord; Mishael—He that is the strong God; Azariah—The Lord is a help. To make them forget the God of their fathers,

savour of the Chaldean idolatry. Belteshazzar signifies the keeper of the hidden treasures of Bel; Shadrach—The inspiration of the sun, which the Chaldeans worshipped; Meshach—Of the goddess Shach, under which name Venus was worshipped; Abed-nego, The servant of the shining fire, which they worshipped also. Thus, though they would not force them from the religion of their fathers to that of their conquerors, yet they did what they could by fair means insensibly to wean them from the former and instill the latter into them

B. Vv.8-16
like Joseph - favour in prison - but God caused it not his merits alone...

That Daniel was still firm to his religion. They had changed his name, but they could not change his nature

Not just proud, argumentative, not nec sinful …but scrupulous in Jewish id = This was not out of sullenness, or peevishness, or a spirit of contradiction, but from a principle of conscience. Perhaps it was not in itself unlawful for them to eat of the king’s meat or to drink of his wine. But, 1. They were scrupulous concerning the meat, lest it should be sinful. Sometimes such meat would be set before them as was expressly forbidden by their law, as swine’s flesh; or they were afraid lest it should have been offered in sacrifice to an idol, or blessed in the name of an idol. The Jews were distinguished from other nations very much by their meats (, ), and these pious young men, being in a strange country, thought obliged to keep charactyer of peculiar people
COME OUT OF HER - don’t partake in her impurities

Note, When God’s people are in Babylon they have need to take special care that they partake not in her sins. Providence seemed to lay this meat before them; being captives they must eat what they could get and must not disoblige their masters; yet, if the command be against it, they must abide by that. Though Providence says, Kill and eat, conscience says, Not so, Lord, for nothing common or unclean has come into my mouth

Sometimes - when we carve a pet sin, no direct command fobidding, we also turn blind eye to pricniples, put ourselves in position to sin - which is not right to do:

2. They were jealous over themselves, lest, though it should not be sinful in itself, it should be an occasion of sin to them, lest, by indulging their appetites with these dainties, they should grow sinful, voluptuous, and in love with the pleasures of Babylon. They had learned David’s prayer, Let me not eat of their dainties (Ps. 141:4), and Solomon’s precept, Be not desirous of dainties, for they are deceitful meat (Prov. 23:3), and accordingly they form their resolution.

Young people = Note, It is very much the praise of all, and especially of young people, to be dead to the delights of sense, not to covet them, not to relish them, but to look upon them with indifference. Those that would excel in wisdom and piety must learn betimes to keep under the body and bring it into subjection. 3
C. 17-21

took a great deal of pains with them, but, after all, their achievements are ascribed to God only. It was he that gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; for every good and perfect gift is from above, from the Father of the lights. It is the Lord our God that gives men power to get this wealth; the mind is furnished only by him that formed it. The great learning which God gave these four children was, 1. A balance for their losses. They had, for the iniquity of their fathers, been deprived of the honours and pleasures that would have attended their noble extraction; but, to make them amends for that, God, in giving them learning, gave them better honours and pleasures than those they had been deprived of. 2. A recompence for their integrity. They kept to their religion, even in the minutest instances of it, and would not so much as defile themselves with the king’s meat or wine, but became, in effect, Nazarites; and now God rewarded

To Daniel he gave a double portion; he had understanding in visions and dreams; he knew how to interpret dreams, as Joseph, not by rules of art, such as are pretended to be given by the oneirocritics, but by a divine sagacity and wisdom which God gave him. Nay, he was endued with a prophetic spirit, by which he was enabled to converse with God, and to receive the notices of divine things in dreams and visions, Num. 12:6.

this gift given to Daniel, we find him, in this book, all along employed about dreams and visions, interpreting or entertaining them; for, as every one has received the gift, so shall he have an opportunity, and so should he have a heart, to minister the same, 1 Pt. 4:10.

upon trial, he found those poor young captive Jews ten times wiser and better than all the magicians that were in all his realm, v. 20. He was soon aware of something extraordinary in these young men, and, which gave him a surprising satisfaction, was soon aware that a little of their true divinity was preferable to a great deal of the divination he had been used to. What is the chaff to the wheat? what are the magicians’ rods to Aaron’s? There was no comparison between them. These four young students were better, were ten times better, than all the old practitioners, put them all together, that were in all his realm, and we may be sure that they were not a few. This contempt did God pour upon the pride of the Chaldeans, and this honour did he put upon the low estate of his own people

As Fewell has pointed out, our story begins at the end of another story.3 The forces that brought Nebuchadnezzar (or at least his army) to Jerusalem during the reign of Jehoiakim are hinted at elsewhere (cf. —74); here we are simply informed that he moved against Jerusalem, resulting in the deportation of the heroes of our book.
Historical context: Jehoiakim are hinted at elsewhere (cf. —74); here we are simply informed that he moved against Jerusalem, resulting in the deportation of the heroes of our book.ally of the remnants of the Assyrians. Battles with Egyptian and Syrian armies continued in the next few years. In 605 Nebuchadnezzar was now the head of the army in Syria. He defeated the Egyptians at Carchemish, a victory that opened the rest of Syria and Palestine to the Babylonian forces.15 The Babylonian Chronicle at this point mentions in a general way that Nebuchadnezzar found success in his incursions into Syria-Palestine, and it is here that we understand that he besieged Jerusalem and compelled Jehoiakim to become an unwilling vassal. Debate surrounds as to whether Jehoiakim himself was temporarily deported to Babylon or whether he was only threatened with deportation. In either case, we agree with Dillard that this deportation should be “associated with the deportation of Daniel and his friends along with articles from the temple in Jehoiakim’s third year after Nebuchadnezzar defeated Neco at Carchemish” (cf. ).16
The narrator rips away the curtain and informs his readers of the reality behind the appearance. He does so simply by saying that “the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his [Nebuchadnezzar’s] hand.” Nebuchadnezzar’s might, though considerable, was not the reason why Jerusalem fell under his influence; it was the result of the will and action of God himself. This subtle phrase introduces a major theme of the book, theconflict between overweening human power and the power of God. A major concern of the book is to reinforce the belief that the sovereignty of God far surpasses the power of even the most mighty of human rulers. This theme is supported here by the use of the word “Lord” (‘adonai) rather than “LORD” (yhwh) to refer to God. The former emphasizes God’s ownership, his control.

Daniel clearly would have been trained in the arts of divination through such means as interpreting unusual terrestrial and celestial phenomena, astrology, the examination of sheep livers, and so forth. Indeed, as the footnote to the NIV text points out, the Hebrew literally reads “the literature of the Chaldeans,” not “the Babylonians.” It is true that Chaldea, mentioned as the tribe in control of Babylonia, is another name for Babylon. However, itsoon29 became a byword for “magician” or “diviner,” since the culture was so closely associated with this practice. The art of divination, or reading omens, is well-attested in ancient Mesopotamia.30 According to William Farber, omens were the primary way by which the gods revealed their “will, intentions, or fateful decisions to people.”31 However, this type of divine revelation is different from what we know as biblical prophecy. Divination was a learned practice in that portended events were associated with certain signs (like symptoms of an illness), whether the shape of a liver, unusual births, the flight pattern of birds, the stars, or dreams.32 Diviners used reference books to tease out the significance of the sign. Omens could be solicted or unsolicted. In the case of dreams, they could be solicited by an incubation rite, where the subject induced sleep expectant of a significant dream.
Imagine Name change - inculturation - taken in
Indeed, as we read closely in this section, we marvel at just how far Daniel and his friends are taken in the Babylonian acculturation program. In verses 6–7, we learn that their names were changed. On the surface, this may seem benign to those of us who live in a modern Western culture, where name and identity are only mildly associated. In the ancient Near East, however, the name, which often contained the name of the one’s deity, was integrally connected with a person’s identity. Thus, the Babylonians began the process of reeducation by giving their captives new

Daniel (“God is my judge”) becomes Belteshazzar (either “May [a god] protect his life” or “Lady [a goddess], protect the king”).33 Azariah (“Yah ismy help”) becomes Abednego (probably a bastardized form of “servant of Nabu”). Hananiah (“Yah has been gracious”) and Mishael (“Who is what God is?”) becomes Shadrach and Meshach.
