I. THE COMMAND TO LOVE IS OLD VS 7

-LOVE IS ETERNAL
-IT IS AS OLD AS GOD IS, BECUSE GOD IS LOVE.
-God’s holy standards have always included love because his righteous decrees are a reflection of His own nature.
-So from the beginning, in the OT we have the command to Love.
-God’s people are expected to reflect God’s character.
Genesis 45:15 ESV
And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them. After that his brothers talked with him.
Leviticus 19:18 ESV
You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
Duetironomy
Deuteronomy 6:5 ESV
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Deutoronomy
Leviticus 19:18 ESV
You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
Matthew 22:36–40 ESV
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Jesus tells us that Love…that is Love for God and Love for Neighbor…is the peg on which ALL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS HANG.
The 10 Commandments are nothing more than LOVE IN ACTION....
-The first 4 relate to our love for God
No other gods before him
No graven images
Lord’s name in vain
Keeping the Sabbath day holy
-The last 6 relate to our love for Neighbor
i. Honor thy father and thy mother
ii. Do not murder
iii. adultery
iv. steal
V. false witness
VI. Coveting what belongs to our neighbor.
WHAT WE LEARN FROM THAT IS THAT
THE COMMAND TO LOVE IS NOT A COMMAND FOR US TO FEEL. IT IS A COMMAND FOR US TO ACT.
-JOHN IS COMBATTING GNOSTICISM, REMEMBER?
-Philosphyical dualism.
-philosphy is divorced from morality and ethics.
-That is, think deep, but live loose.
-Think ethically, morally, and rightly, but that had no baring on how they lived.
-Philosphy today is largly divorced from moral action...
ILLUST: PHILOSPHY IN COLLEGE.
-9-11 hijackers
-relitive truth.
-what is right and wrong?
CHRISTIANS SHOULD NEVER DIVORCE BIBLICAL THOUGHT FROM MORAL ACTION.
THE COMMAND TO LOVE IS NOT A COMMAND FOR US TO FEEL. IT IS A COMMAND FOR US TO ACT.
-BUTTERFLIES AND WARM FUZZIES DO NOT MAKE YOU A FAITHFUL CHRISTIAN.
-NO…LOVE IS NOT A FEELING IT IS AN ACTION.
-NOT A PHYLOSPHICAL CONSTRUCT, ITS SOMETHING WE DO
-IT IS A DECISION OF THE WILL THAT WE MAKE…AND DEMONSTRATION OF THAT DECISION AS WE LIVE IT OUT
-WE LOVE NOT BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE LOVABLE, BUT BECAUSE THE GOD THAT DWELLS IN OUR HEARTS IS LOVE!

II. THE COMMAND TO LOVE IS NEW VS 8

NEW - Not new..chronologically
-New in quality or essence.
-Notice the John defines this new quality of love
-”which is true in him and in you”
LOVE AS AN OLD COMMANDMENT
- There is a duty for us to love
-God’s love was plainly manifested in his divine character
-But it was not perfectly manifested in humanity.
NEVER BEFORE HAD THE COMMAND TO LOVE EVER BEEN CARRIED OUT PERFECTLY IN HUMANITY UNTIL CHRIST CAME.
-GOD, WHO LOVES PERFECTLY, BECAME MAN.
-WHAT MAKES LOVE NEW IS THAT IT IS TRUE IN HIM.
-BUT ALSO “IT IS TRUE IN US”
-You do not have the power to love anybody with perfect love.
-Only God has that power.
-Often, even what we think is perfect and pure love, is tainted by selfishness, desires, sin, and hate.
-THAT IS BAD NEWS FOR US. because of verse 9 & 11
-SO HOW THIS IS LOVE TRUE IN HIM AND TRUE IN US?
THE BEAUTY OF THE GOSPEL IS THAT GOD TAKES THE ONE WHO CANNT AND FILLS HIM WITH THE ONE WHO CAN.
By placing your faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior God transforms your heart
-gives you new eyes…to see people with compassion that you have never had before.
-”helpless and harassed like sheep without a shephard”
-Gives you a new mind…to consider ways to love God and Love neighbor.
-if you dont want to change the way you think about people, then you should never come to Christ.
-But if you want a relationship with God that floods your soul with the Love of God and overflows with love for people, then you should come running to jesus.

III. Love IS A TEST Vs 9-11

-Do you have hate in your heart toward another person?
-Why?
-The wronged you or someone else that you are close to.
-In other words they sinned against you.
-DOES GOD HATE YOU?
-No God loves me?
-Why?
-Becuase you are lovable?
-Attractive?
-=Special?
-You deserve His love?
—Sinless?
-NO…IN OTHER WORDS IN THE MIDST OF YOUR IMPERFECTION GOD LOVES YOU.
-He calls YOU to love that same way.
HATE IS BLINDING.
-it is darkness.
-Verse 11 whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going....because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
-ARE YOUR EYES BLINDED?
-Do you make excuse for your hate?
-There will be a day where we stand before Christ and give an account for how we loved of IF we loved.
-ON THAT DAY “I WAS JUST RAISED THAT WAY” will not be a valid excuse.
-”I was born in that south and that is just how things are.”
-Maybe…but you can be born again. NOT IN THE SOUTH…BUT FROM ABOVE.
