Introduction

As we gather to worship on the weekend that we celebrate American Independence, our eyes are turned to flags, our ears to the sounds of fireworks, and our hearts burn with gratitude and pride when we think of our great nation. Upon further reflection, however, we often begin to think of our nation’s shortcomings and faults. it would seem that this past election, out of the 330 million prospects, we picked the 3 worst possible candidates to run for president. We hear of wars, of rumors of wars. We see the major parties more set on blaming each other than fixing problems or getting anything real done. Our nation quickly being over run by mobs of people fueled by hatred, prejudice, and ignorance. Gone are the days of peaceful productive protests…now it is simply mob rule. Gone are the days of productive discourse where folks of different views could come together and find common ground. What happened to America the Beautiful?
This kind of introduction gets preached in Bible Believing churches all over the nation on memorial day and independence day weekends. What can be done? At this point many would say that America needs more religion. Or we need to be more spiritual, or that we need prayer in public schools, or people must start going to church again. While all of these things might be nice, they will not change the mood or or focus of a nation or its leaders.
The answer is found in
Psalm 138:4 KJV 1900
All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord, When they hear the words of thy mouth.
Psalm 138:4–5 KJV 1900
All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord, When they hear the words of thy mouth. Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord: For great is the glory of the Lord.
In this Psalm David is focusing on the supremacy of God above all. We don’t need a God, we need THE GOD. We don’t need a name to confess, we need THE NAME to confess. We don’t need a word to believe, we need THE WORD, the word that is above all, to believe. Absolute TRUTH is the hope of a nation.

THE GOD above all Gods

Psalm 138:1 KJV 1900
I will praise thee with my whole heart: Before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.
Better than man made wisdom and reasoning.
Colossians 2:8 KJV 1900
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
Better than false gods with Satanic deception.
1 Corinthians 10:19–22 KJV 1900
What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
The Truth of God’s existence does not depend on whether or not you believe it.

THE NAME above all Names

Psalm 138:2 KJV 1900
I will worship toward thy holy temple, And praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: For thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
Ps
Name = reputation
Proverbs 22:1 KJV 1900
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, And loving favour rather than silver and gold.
A name that saves
Acts 4:10–12 KJV 1900
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
John 1:12 KJV 1900
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Romans 10:13 KJV 1900
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Reputation of lovingkindness
Reputation of truth
Salvation comes at the name of Jesus. He must not be anonymous. He cannot be replaced or made generic. Saving faith is brand specific! One day every creature will acknowledge that fact.
Philippians 2:9–11 KJV 1900
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The WORD above all else

Psalm 138:2 KJV 1900
I will worship toward thy holy temple, And praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: For thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
Psalm 138:3 KJV 1900
In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, And strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.
The word is perfect
2 Timothy 3:16 KJV 1900
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2 tim
The word is preserved
Psalm 12:6–7 KJV 1900
The words of the Lord are pure words: As silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, Thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
The word is powerful to bring faith
Romans 10:17 KJV 1900
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10
The word is powerful to convict and convert.
Hebrews 4:12 KJV 1900
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The word is powerful to comfort
Psalm 138:3 KJV 1900
In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, And strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.
The word is powerful to compel praise
Psalm 138:4–5 KJV 1900
All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord, When they hear the words of thy mouth. Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord: For great is the glory of the Lord.
psalm 138
