Angels, demons and the word (soteriology means Saviour/preserver/salvation)

Today there is an industry surrounding angelology, fairies, leprechauns, etc. and as scholars we need to be able to negotiate what is true concerning the beliefs of Christianity.
But what do you think is an angel?
Could what some see as an angel be a demon?
As we have studied much of our understanding as Christians has evolved from the Judiastic belief system and we need to now look at how the Jews and Jesus saw the role of both angels and demons.
Virtually all religions & cultures have various supernatural entities that are considered good or malevolent, even evil. In some cultures, these may be simply forces of nature like hurricanes. Sometimes they are entities with capabilities for destruction such as fertility gods/goddesses. And in some belief systems, they are evil spirits hellbent on making one's life miserable.

Ashmedai or Ashmodeus (the devil on two sticks)

this character originates in the Book of Tobit and is there described as the king of the demons, he also appears in other Talmudic writings concerning the construction of Solomon’s Temple. He later in medieval times emerged as the king of the nine hells as the demon of lust responsible for the twisting of sexual desires in people in the extra biblical source the Book of Tobias.
His name means ‘divine being’ and he has the power to send those who fall under his spell to the second level of hell and in reality may have originated form earlier Persian beliefs.
Biblical sources
2 Kings 17:30 NKJV
The men of Babylon made Succoth Benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima,
This source although not an exact name match suggests that he is a false god of the Syrians (at least some heathen gods are therefore described as representations of demons and not just as idols).
There is a loose connection/suggestion that the story in the Book of Tobit:
The Asmodeus of the Book of Tobit is hostile to Sarah, Raguel's daughter, (); and slays seven successive husbands on their wedding nights, impeding the sexual consummation of the marriages. He is described as 'the worst of demons'. When the young Tobias is about to marry her, Asmodeus proposes the same fate for him, but Tobias is enabled, through the counsels of his attendant angel Raphael, to render him innocuous.
Can you think of a biblical story that also mentions seven husbands?
The challenge by the Sadducees to Jesus may have originated here:
Matthew 22:23–33 NKJV
The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, saying: “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. Last of all the woman died also. Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.” Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
: 23-
In the Kabbalah he is the result of a sexual liaison between King David and a demon appearing in a female form (a succubus the daughter of Adam’s first wife who mated with an archangel) this originated in medieval times.
There are a number of other extra biblical sources which also mention Ashmedai but quoted are the main sources.

Jewish beliefs about demons

The Jews held various beliefs surrounding demons and their earthly activities. Strikingly God is definite about avoiding such activity completely and provides a harsh punishment for engaging in such activity:
Leviticus 20:26–27 NKJV
And you shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine. ‘A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them.’ ”
Biblical Counseling Keys on Satan, Demons & Satanism C. What are the Physical Symptoms of Satanic Involvement?

The spiritual and physical are interrelated. Those who have learned to rest in the peaceful protection of Jesus will avoid many of the physical side effects that accompany stress, worry and unresolved anger. Likewise, participation in satanic activity can bring about bizarre physical abnormalities and inner drives toward self-mutilation … ultimately even suicide. King Saul disobeyed God and consulted a medium for military guidance.

“Saul then said to his attendants, ‘Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.’ ‘There is one in Endor,’ they said.”

(1 Samuel 28:7)

After hearing the prophecy about his own death on the next day, Saul became so despondent with fear of the Philistines that he took his own life.

“Saul said to his armor-bearer, ‘Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.’ But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it.”

(1 Chronicles 10:4)

• headaches

• hearing perverted voices

• eating disorders

• vomiting

• supernatural strength

• vile or violent dreams

• voice change

• dizziness

• insensitivity to pain

• excessive sleepiness

The result of Saul’s engagement in with the demonic is a warning that it seems many Jews ignored in Jesus time...

Beliefs in Jesus time about the demonic

Beliefs in Jesus time about the demonic
•they arose out of Adam’s soul after his first sin;
•they were spirits of sinful people who lived before the Flood;
•they were spirits of sinful people who build Babel;
•they were generated from the sins of the wicked;
•they were the offspring of Eve and fallen angels or Adam and female spirits;
N.Scotland, “The Charismatic Devil”, p.105 in P.Riddell, Angels and Demons,2007.
•they were the spirits of sinful people;
•some are transformed over 28 years in equal intervals from vipers to vampires to thistles and thorns to demons.
•The propagate themselves.
•They roam at different times
•when people sleep, they send lying dreams.
•You may meet a demon in the dark without realising it, so it is best not to greet anyone at night.
•Similarly, one should not sleep in an empty house for one could be exposed to an attack.
•They lived in certain shrubs, under gutters, in ruins, cemeteries and especially in the wilderness.
•They were found on dirty hands and on breadcrumbs
•Their most active times are on the eves of Wednesdays and Sabbaths, and just before dawn
•Night, in particular, is spirit time. Therefore, liquids left standing overnight were not to be drunk nor should one drink from a well at night, for the demons may have drunk from it.
•Food placed under a bed for safekeeping during the night was assumed to be contaminated by evil spirits.
•Similarly, food left overnight was felt to be no longer fit for consumption.
•One should be tightly wrapped in one’s blankets at night, or else engrossed in study.
do you know of any modern day practices that reflect these beliefs?

How to avoid a demon

•The Rabbis required that no man be left behind in the Synagogue to finish his prayers alone
•One should travel home with a companion.
•Special prayers were instituted for the Hazan to recite so that the congregation might be detained until its slowest member had caught up with it.
•It was believed that demons had power over even numbers and so it was felt risky to drink an even number of cups (except Passover when it was safe).
•One should forever avoid the place where first attacked by a demon because the demon would wait there for another opportunity.
•Similarly, one should not imprison demons by shutting the doors and windows of a house. So one pierced a small hole in the door or window to enable them to move about freely.
•Such theories cause fear in some but often led to their real evil designs being overlooked. To conjure them up was not advisable and dangerous. Josephus stated that God had granted this power to Hezekiah.

The power of demons

•Every sort of bodily sickness was ascribed to them •they had the power to kill.
•They brought blight on crops, sent hail, lightning, floods and every destructive terror. Epilepsy, paralysis, nervous troubles and mental disorders
•They inflicted wounds which could not be cured by people; such healing rested in the hands of God alone.
•It was also believed that a strong demon could cast out of a body a weaker demon. Consider when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "It is only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, that this fellow casts out the demons."
But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "It is only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, that this fellow casts out the demons."
•They had wings and flew
• They ate and drank.
•They knew the future having access to Heaven where they could discover God’s plans – remember the tale of Ashmedai.
• They could assume any form.
•Some had defects (e.g. blindness).
•They could die (one chased a Rabbi, tripped over a tree and died).
•There are male and female forms
• Piety and personal purity.
• The merit of one’s ancestors also served as a protection.
•the Sabbath
•Passover, too, was as “a night of protection”. Indeed, doors of houses were left unlocked overnight as a mark of confidence.
•Study was another form of protection. The Torah was believed to possess anti-demonic virtues.
•The regular reading of the Torah in the Synagogue service was believed to protect Israel from the Devil.
Are some of these beliefs in demonic power seen today in the church?

Protective measures

•By magic and witchcraft, demons could be disarmed. Charms, amulets, spells, incantations and the name of Jehovah were used, the most powerful name being “Shaddai”.
•People also invoked the aid of Solomon, who was supposed to have extra power against them.
•Before setting out on a journey, it was common practice to invoke the protection of angels. Compare Western Christianity’s superstition re St.Christopher
• To free a demoniac, one should fill a new pot with freshly drawn water, pour in some olive oil, whisper over it nine times, with the mystical names that appertain to the Psalm, and then bathe the patient with the liquid.
••Light was another protective agent due to the belief that demons shun the light and also because of the purificatory virtues of fire, the source of light.
• The Talmud records, “carrying a torch at night is a good as having a companion (to keep the demons away) while walking by moonlight is equivalent to having two companions”.
•Running water neutralises a magic act; it dispels mirages created by demons and drives them away. To bar demons from entering one’s home, one must pour water over the threshold.
•The most powerful liquid was supposed to be spittle, especially that of a fasting man.
Given all this would you agree the current commercial industry surrounding guardian angels, etc is based on ancient practices and beliefs? If so how would you deal with a Christian who believed in this?

Characteristics and symptoms

Biblical Counseling Keys on Satan, Demons & Satanism A. What are the Levels of Satanic Involvement?

A. What Are the Levels of Satanic Involvement?

Involvement with the demonic is progressive. For most, it starts by straying down a seemingly innocent path beginning with a curiosity about horoscopes, occultic games, magic and fortune-telling … then unknowingly turning the corner only to travel on a terrorizing trip of demonic domination.

“Keep on, then, with your magic spells and with your many sorceries, which you have labored at since childhood. Perhaps you will succeed, perhaps you will cause terror.”

(Isaiah 47:12)

• Superficial

— No real understanding of satanism

— Fascination and curiosity with the supernatural

— Experimental and superficial activities

— Involvement with games, books, horoscopes, rock music, etc.

• Self-Styled

— Views that cover the whole spectrum of satanic beliefs

— Lack of any connection with mainstream satanism

— Improvised and impulsive activities

— Involvement with socially deviant activities (pornography, homosexuality, hard drugs)

• Secretive

— Beliefs that are the reversal of Christian beliefs

— Small, individually oriented groups

— Hidden and illegal activities

— Involvement with black magic and ritualistic sacrificing of animals and humans

• Sanctioned

— Beliefs based on the pursuit of hedonistic pleasure

— Large national and international organizations

— Open and legal activities

— Involvement in destructive magic and sexual rituals

“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

(2 Corinthians 4:4)

B. What Are the Signs of Satanic Involvement?

A teenager was given the assignment to write a paper on any religious group. During his research, he became obsessed with satanism. While he was preoccupied with sadistic rock music and satanic rituals, his personality changed. Moving from soccer to sorcery, the boy became hostile and rebellious … eventually killing his mother and himself. This story is both tragic and true. Jesus warns us to “be on guard” … to watch out for false allegiances and abominations where hearts are hardened against His power.

“Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.”

(Mark 13:12)

SIGNS OF POSSIBLE SATANIC CURIOSITY

• Unexplained mood swings

• Intense rebelliousness

• Black candles

• Experimentation with drugs

• Fixation on death

• Use of satanic paraphernalia

• Secret agendas and unexplained activities

• Loss of interest in school, work or normal activities

• Obsession with occultic books, games, videos, movies

• Avoidance of family members

• Change in friends

• Black clothing and jewelry

• Hostility toward the church

• Preference for heavy metal rock music

• Drawing or displaying satanic symbols

Given this explanation should we be careful in ascribing demonic activity to people?

Jesus encounters with demons

The Jewish belief was that demons were anti man and not against God - they could hurt you but not cause moral evil and were mischievous beings who could be easily defeated.
Does the NT agree with this perception?
We must be careful in discerning the encounters Jesus had with demons, whilst there is demonic influences and even possession there is not a demon behind every door, in every painting or in your car when it breaks down.
Christian attitudes to healing must be carefully balanced and Holy Spirit led, Jesus himself believed in demons, Paul speaks about the demonic hierarchy
Ephesians 3:10 NKJV
to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places,
and it is important that we seen from scripture that Jesus never got bogged down in the minutae of demon
Ephesians 6:12 NKJV
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:and it is important that we seen from scripture that Jesus never got bogged down in the minutae of demon
And it is important that we see from scripture that Jesus never got bogged down in the minutiae of demon control and the NT says little about demonic kingdoms other than a few encounters. All sickness and disease can never be attributed to demonic influence.
“Perhaps nowhere is it more apparent that charismatic Christianity is driven by consumerism than in its more extreme view on demonology. It is here that we see constant hype and an ever-flowing stream of new techniques and teachings, each designed to gun down Satan’s hosts and deliver the afflicted from their clutches. These new spiritual warfare weapons include naming the demons, confronting the powers, street marches, battle songs, entry point teachings, ritual anointing, spiritual mapping, warfare prayers, stamping on the devil and opening up the heavenly portals, to name but a few.”
N.Scotland, “The Charismatic Devil”, p.105 in P.Riddell, Angels and Demons,2007.
It is clear that Jesus was aware both physically and spiritually of demonic activity in the areas where he walked as can be seen in these examples:
Mark 5:2–5 NKJV
And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.
Mark 9:28–29 NKJV
And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”
: 28-
Jesus clearly attacked Jewish belief in Satan and the demonic and we can see that both the mainstream religious sects challenged him and his response addresses the heart situation of Jewish belief:
John 8:44 NKJV
You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
John the beloved disciple would have been very aware of Jesus attitude towards Jewish demonic belief and stated clearly how we should view the subject today:
1 John 3:7–10 NKJV
Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.

Encounters in Luke

Luke mentions the encounters Jesus had with demonic forces beginning with the temptations...
Luke 4:1–13 NKJV
Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ ” Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.” And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ” Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ” Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.
Luke
Luke also mentions other encounters:
Luke 4:33–37 NKJV
Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
luke
Luke strives to show the reader that the demons knew who Jesus was better than the religious leaders, the people and even the disciples in 8:26-40, 9:41, 11:14-26.
He also points out specific demonic activity
in 4:33-37 a person is cast down
in 8:26-40 a person is humiliated and hurt -
in 9:38-43 a person is convulsed after being thrown to the ground
in 13:11-17 a person is paralysed for 18 years by a demon,
in 22:3, 21 a demon troubles and torments Peter
in 8:12 demonic activity is seen preventing conversion
In each case Luke indicates that fear the demons felt encountering Jesus response and how Jesus sets the people free. Luke also indicates that the power and authority is passed by Jesus to his disciples showing this is a God ordained and legitimate ministry for believers.
Why do you think Luke mentions these encounters and what is he trying to prove?

Encounters in Acts

In acts the character Simon Magus is mentioned he was a sorcerer of great repute for his magical arts among the Samaritans
Acts 8:9–11 NKJV
But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously practiced sorcery in the city and astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the great power of God.” And they heeded him because he had astonished them with his sorceries for a long time.
11
Afterwards he became a professed convert to the faith under the preaching of Philip the deacon and evangelist. His profession was, however, soon found to be hollow. His conduct called forth from Peter a stern rebuke
Acts 8:18–23 NKJV
And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.”
. He afterwards became a professed convert to the faith under the preaching of Philip the deacon and evangelist 12, (). His profession was, however, soon found to be hollow. His conduct called forth from Peter a stern rebuke 8:18-23). From this moment he disappears from the Church's history. The term "Simony," as denoting the purchase for money of spiritual offices, is derived from him.
: 8:18-23). From this moment he disappears from the Church's history. The term "Simony," as denoting the purchase for money of spiritual offices, is derived from him.

Pauline encounters and advice

With the resurrection of Jesus Christ the demonic activity continued and in essence has increased from that time (don’t get too caught up in this). Paul encountered demonic spirits and activity as can be seen in his epistles along with warning the Jews their behaviour was inconsistent with walking with God:
Acts 16:16–18 NKJV
Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.
Acts
Ephesians 2:2 NKJV
in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
Ephesians
What is Paul’s purpose in dealing with the slave girl after so much time (why did he wait)?

Limits to Satan and demonic power

Biblical Counseling Keys on Satan, Demons & Satanism C. See How Satan’s Power is Limited

God and Satan possess the same power—or that the power of Satan is equal to the power of God. Nothing could be further from the truth. Cast out of the heavenly realms to roam the earth, Satan has been given power, but only to the degree that the Lord allows. In the first chapter of the Book of Job, a dialogue between God and Satan confirms that Satan’s activity is limited and always requires the sovereign permission of God.

• Satan cannot be everywhere.

“The LORD said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’ Satan answered the LORD, ‘From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.’ ” (Job 1:7)

• Satan has no absolute power over a believer’s possessions.

“Then the LORD said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.’ ‘Does Job fear God for nothing?’ Satan replied. ‘Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.’ ” (Job 1:8–11)

• Satan has no absolute power over a believer’s body.

“The LORD said to Satan, ‘Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.’ Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.” (Job 1:12)

• Satan has no absolute power over a believer’s life.

“Then the LORD said to Satan.… ‘[Job] still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.’ ‘Skin for skin!’ Satan replied. ‘A man will give all he has for his own life. But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.’ The LORD said to Satan, ‘Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.’ ” (Job 2:3–6)

• Satan must obey Jesus.

“Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” ’ Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.” (Matthew 4:10–11)

• Satan must ask permission to tempt a believer.

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.” (Luke 22:31)

• Satan has to leave if he is resisted.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

• Satan cannot protect his followers.

“Then he [Jesus, the King] will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’ ” (Matthew 25:41)

• Satan cannot prevent his own demise.

“The devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” (Revelation 20:10)

Q “Does Satan have the power to know our thoughts?”

The Bible says that only God has the power to know the hearts of all men. Although Satan is highly intelligent (Ezekiel 28:12), he is still a created angel, and creatures do not have the divine

Satanic Symbols

While satanism is characterised by its symbolism, the WORD of GOD stands staunchly against all that is satanic these symbols you can look up in your own time if interested but their meaning and a corresponding scripture are included.
“Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.…”
()
Anarchy
The symbol of anarchy represents the abolition of all law and authority.
The symbol of anarchy represents the abolition of all law and authority.
“Then Jesus … said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.’ ”
()
Triangle - travellers use this symbol for a different purpose (avoid this house it is unwelcoming)
The symbol of the triangle is often drawn on the ground as the place where a demon would appear during a ritual.
“They sacrificed to demons, which are not God.… You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.”
()
Circle- travellers use this symbol for a different purpose (this house welcomes us)
The circle symbolizes the protection from evil without and the ability to contain power within.
“Pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith. But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.”
()
Cross of Confusion
This ancient Roman symbol questions the existence and validity of Christianity.
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
()
Anti-Justice
The Roman symbol of justice was a double bladed axe in the upright position. Satanists, in keeping with their anarchy theme, invert the axe to represent “anti-justice.”
“The Lord is known by his justice; the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands.”

“O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth.… You said in your heart … ‘I will raise my throne above the stars of God.… I will make myself like the Most High.’But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit.”

Swastika or Broken Cross - note this is the Nazi symbol
The backwards swastika, as shown here, represents the elements as being out of harmony and turning against nature. Originally, it represented the four winds, the four seasons and the four compass points with its four arms at 90-degree angles showing harmony with nature.
“For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible.… He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
