a belief that something will happen or is likely to happen
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/expect
Usage of Greek Word in the New Testament that is translated as expect and look
Our Expectation is a result of what we believe
Explore our expectation of God and God’s expectation of us
What was Jesus response to faith?
What role does fear have in the kingdom of God?
What was Jesus’ response to fear?
Expectations We Have of God
Expectations We Have of God
First look at the disciples -Jesus spent his whole ministry teaching and demonstrating God’s power so that they would always have faith in God and his willingness to deliver
In Mark chapter 3
Jesus had healed a man with a withered hand
He ordained the 12 disciples that they should be with him and also be sent out to preach and heal the sick and cast out demons
In chapter 4, Jesus had spent all day teaching about the kingdom
Jesus called the parable of the sower a mystery of the kingdom
vs. 21-23 talks about how a candle is used to bring light and in the same way nothing is hid in the kingdom. Everything will be made known.
vs. 24-25 Jesus explains that they need to be careful what they hear, if they hear (the truth that Jesus was teaching) even more will be given
vs. 26-29 Jesus describes growth in the kingdom which will be followed by a harvest
vs 30-32 Jesus compares the kingdom to a mustard seed, it starts small but will in the end become the greatest
Jesus ends the day by telling his disciples that they all need to cross over the sea to the other side.
Jesus had taught them about the kingdom, but they were about to experience the power of the kingdom first hand
35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
Jesus was asleep
One can only sleep deeply when he is at peace
Jesus knew he was in the will of God
The disciples woke Jesus saying, don’t you care that we are going to die?
The boat was about full of water -they likely had done everything they could before waking Jesus
It isn’t clear what they expected Jesus to do -they clearly didn’t expect what Jesus was about to do. I don’t believe it entered their mind -but they wanted him to help somehow.
Jesus rebuked the wind and told the sea, Peace, be still. He then asked the disciples two questions:
Why are you so fearful?
How come you don’t have any faith?
Jesus clearly showed what his expectations were for his disciples
The calm sea and wind produced even greater fear in the disciples. They were still learning what was all possible. Their expectations were being increased.
Chapter 5:1-20 Jesus encounters a demon possessed man
This was the whole reason they crossed the sea. Sometimes we face opposition to following God’s will but we can always overcome it by staying in peace and exercising our authority as children of God.
Jesus immediately told the spirits to leave
When the people of the area saw the man healed -they were afraid, but by now the disciples were likely expecting this. It doesn’t mention that they were afraid this time.
v. 19 -We can learn that Jesus has compassion on those in bondage -he came to set the captives free! Jesus crossed the sea just to do this.
The disciples expectations of God were continuing to grow.
The man asked Jesus if he could follow him, but Jesus said, No. Instead Jesus told him to testify how Jesus had compassion on him. He went out and shared his story in the area of Decapolis.
Jesus’ expectation was for him to go and testify
Jesus crosses the sea
21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea. 22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, 23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. 24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him. 25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, 26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, 27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. 28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. 29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes? 31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. 34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
vs. 22-24 -a synagogue ruler asked Jesus to heal his daughter so Jesus starts heading to his house
This man expected that if Jesus would lay hands on her that she would be healed
vs. 25-34 a woman comes and is healed by simply touching Jesus clothing
Why? Because that is what she expected.
There were crowds of people around Jesus and none of them were healed -they didn’t need anything so they didn’t receive anything
How is it when you go throughout the week? Are you expecting?
How about on a Sunday morning? are you expecting the Holy Spirit to speak to you?

David’s Expectation
5 My soul, wait thou only upon God;
For my expectation is from him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation:
He is my defence; I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my salvation and my glory:
The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
8 Trust in him at all times; ye people,
Pour out your heart before him:
God is a refuge for us. Selah.

The Jews Expectation of their Messiah
The Jews Expectation of their Messiah
They expected a king that would deliver them from the rule of the Romans
In & 21, Jesus told them that the kingdom couldn’t be seen, but the kingdom was within them.
Their wrong expectations resulted in them crucifying Jesus
12 Hope deferred maketh the heart sick:
But when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.
The Israelites in the wilderness needed to take a step of faith to conquer the giants of Caanan, but they only looked at natural ability
They didn’t consider God’s promises
They played it safe
32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
Numbers 13:
They only looked with their natural eyes
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Walk after the Spirit
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Before talking about the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit, Paul exhorts us to Walk in the Spirit
Walking in the Spirit = obeying the truth that has been revealed to you.
This may be general or specific
You may be prompted to pray for someone, encourage someone
It is not a good feeling, it isn’t a feeling you get when your favorite song comes on -he speaks and prompts us to do what is God’s will

1 John 4:17
Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
