8. (SLIDE 7) IMITATING PAUL - Vs. 17
a) Other translations use the root word "follow" instead of "imitate".
Ø “Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as
you have us for a pattern.” (Phil. 3:17 - NKJV)
b) Paul has requested this of the church before.
Ø “For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many
fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge
you, then, be imitators of me. That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved
and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach
them everywhere in every church.” (1 Cor. 4:15-17)
c) (SLIDE 8) The Truth Is In Their Walk (Because Talk Is Cheap!)
i) Culture Shift: "Do as I say, not as I do!" is a terrible long-term growth strategy!
ii) (SLIDE 9) An Example of Servant Leadership Vs. Status Leadership
Ø Paul is leading the Mission, not managing it. (Imitate & Follow!)
9. (SLIDE 10) ENEMIES OF THE CROSS - VS. 18-19
a) Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary On the Whole Bible
i) “The enemies of the cross of Christ mind nothing but their sensual appetites.
Sin is the sinner’s shame, especially when gloried in. The way of those who
mind earthly things, may seem pleasant, but death and hell are at the end of
it. If we choose their way, we shall share their end.”
b) (SLIDE 11) "Their end is destruction..." (Why?)
c) (SLIDE 12) 3 Trademarks of a Dangerous Church Leader:
i) "...their god is their belly..." (Satisfying Self! Henry's "...sensual appetites...")
ii) (SLIDE 13) "...they glory in their shame..." (Glorifying Self! Unaware people!)
iii) (SLIDE 14) "...with minds set on earthly things." (Past or Present-Minded!
Worshipping the past or present religious systems.)
APPLICATION: IDEA
10. (SLIDE 15) HEAVENLY CITIZENSHIP - VS. 3:20-4:1
a) Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary On the Whole Bible:
i) "The life of a Christian is in heaven, where his Head and his home are, and
where he hopes to be shortly; he sets his affections upon things above; and
where his heart is, there will his conversation be."
Ø (SLIDE 16) Jesus looked past Himself and into the future.
Ø Paul looked past Himself and into the future.
Ø Who should I follow? Who should I imitate?
ii) (SLIDE 17) People worth following; look past themselves and into the future.
CONCLUSION:
11. (SLIDE 18) WHY CHANGE?
a) Why do we have to change? (Change often produces growth!)
Ø Past-Minded vs. Future Minded! (The church has changed a lot since
Paul's day!) Even if we fail, we know more than we did before.
b) Worship, Elder Mentorship, Church Plant, Building Project...change!
12. (SLIDE 19) INVITATION (Worship In Response)
Ø POST-MESSAGE PRAYER (Pray for OFFERING & Close Message)
