In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

Jephthah (jef’-thah) = He will open; i.e., He will set free and liberate; He does open; He sets free; God opens; the breaker through. (root = to open; to ungirt; to unloose; to set free; to engrave).
Gilead (ghil’-e-ad) = Perpetual fountain. A heap of testimony; a witness; mass of testimony; strong.
Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. Gilead was the father of Jephthah.
