The Hand of the Lord in Scripture
The Hand of the Lord in Scripture
Exodus 9:1 - 1 Peter 5:7
Bible Study by Rick Crandall
BACKGROUND:
*This study grew out of a desire to better understand the hand of the Lord after I preached a message on Acts 11:21. There God's Word says, "the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord."
*The Bible often talks about the Hand of the Lord. In the KJV, the phrase "hand of the Lord" is found 39 times, with 36 times in the Old Testament, and 3 in the New Testament. The phrase "Hand of God" is found 16 times in the Bible, 7 times in the Old Testament and 9 times in the New Testament. (All of these Scripture passages with some context are listed at the bottom of this study.)
*Naturally, there are other references to God's Hand that don't include these exact phrases.
*For example, 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 says:
9. Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, "Because I bore him in pain.''
10. And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that YOUR HAND would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!'' So God granted him what he requested.
BIBLE STUDY
*What can we say about the Hand of the Lord? -- Here are some of the truths that stand out to me.
1. FIRST: THE HAND OF THE LORD IS MIGHTY.
*This truth may seem too obvious to mention, but the Lord wants everyone to know that His Hand is mighty. God made this clear when Joshua was leading the Children of Israel, and the Lord miraculously dried up the Jordan River for His people to cross over into the Promised Land.
*Then, Joshua 4:20-24 says:
20. And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal.
21. And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?
22. Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.
23. For the Lord your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
24. That all the people of the earth might know THE HAND OF THE LORD, that it is MIGHTY: that ye might fear the Lord your God for ever.
*The Hand of the Lord is mighty! The Book of Job stresses that God's Hand was mighty enough for creation. In Job 12:7-10, that godly sufferer urged one of his friends to:
7. . . ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:
8. Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.
9. Who knoweth not in all these that THE HAND OF THE LORD hath wrought this?
10. In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
*The Hand of the Lord is mighty! Proverbs 21:1 tells us that "The king's heart is in THE HAND OF THE LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will."
*In the New Testament, the phrase "Hand of God" is a sure sign of God's might. This phrase is found 9 times in the New Testament. Eight of those times, God's Word is talking about Jesus being exalted to the right hand of God.
*Then 1 Peter 5:6-7 urges us to:
6. Humble yourselves therefore under THE MIGHTY HAND OF GOD, that he may exalt you in due time:
7. Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
2. THE HAND OF THE LORD IS MIGHTY. THE HAND OF THE LORD IS ALSO DANGEROUS AND DEADLY AGAINST HIS ENEMIES.
*The very first time we see this "Hand of the Lord" phrase in God's Word, it's in connection with the judgment God was going to pour out on Egypt. Exodus 9:1-4 says:
1. Then the Lord said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh, and tell him, Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.
2. For if thou refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still,
3. Behold, THE HAND OF THE LORD is upon thy cattle which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous Murrain.
4. And the Lord shall sever between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt: and there shall nothing die of all that is the children's of Israel.
*The Hand of the Lord is dangerous and deadly to His enemies. 1 Samuel 5:1-7 tells us that:
1. . . The Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
2. When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3. And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4. And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
5. Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6. But THE HAND OF THE LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
7. And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
*The Hand of the Lord is dangerous and deadly to His enemies. That's why Psalm 75:5-8 gives this stern warning:
5. Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.
6. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.
7. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.
8. For in THE HAND OF THE LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.
*When the Hand of the Lord is against you, you are in extreme danger. When the Hand of the Lord is against you, nothing and no one on earth can help you. And the Hand of the Lord is against His enemies, unless they turn to the Lord and receive Him.
3. THE HAND OF THE LORD IS DANGEROUS AND DEADLY AGAINST HIS ENEMIES. THE HAND OF THE LORD ALSO EMPOWERS HIS SERVANTS.
*For example, in 1 Kings 18:44-46, the Hand of the Lord gave Elijah the strength to run before Ahab's chariot a distance from 16 to 20 miles!
44. And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not.
45. And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
46. And THE HAND OF THE LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
*The Hand of the Lord is mentioned 7 times in the Book of Ezekiel. There God's Hand empowered Ezekiel to go places and see things he never could have seen without the Hand of the Lord upon him in a miraculous way.
4. THE HAND OF THE LORD EMPOWERS HIS SERVANTS. BUT THE LORD'S HAND CAN ALSO BE HEAVY TO DISCIPLINE HIS PEOPLE.
*There were times when King David felt the heavy hand of God's discipline in his life. In Psalm 38, David prayed a desperate yet hopeful prayer to the Lord. Here's how he began in vs. 1-3:
1. O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
2. For thine arrows stick fast in me, and THY HAND PRESSETH ME SORE.
3. There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.
4. For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
*In Psalm 32, David looked back on a time of God's discipline, and David said:
1. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
2. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.
3. When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.
4. For day and night THY HAND WAS HEAVY UPON ME: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.
5. I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
5. THE HAND OF THE LORD CAN BE HEAVY TO DISCIPLINE HIS PEOPLE. BUT THE LORD'S HAND WILL ALSO HELP HIS PEOPLE.
*Ezra was certainly helped by the Hand of the Lord. For example, Ezra 7:6-9 says:
6. This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to THE HAND OF THE LORD his God upon him.
7. And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.
8. And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.
9. For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, ACCORDING TO THE GOOD HAND OF HIS GOD UPON HIM.
*Then in Ezra 7:27-28, the Word of God says:
27. Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to beautify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem:
28. And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellers, and before all the king's mighty princes. And I was strengthened as THE HAND OF THE LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.
*The Hand of the Lord will surely help His people! King David gave us this strong assurance in Psalm 37:23-24:
23. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.
24. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; FOR THE LORD UPHOLDS HIM WITH HIS HAND.
6. THE HAND OF THE LORD WILL HELP HIS PEOPLE. AND TODAY, THE HAND OF THE LORD WILL ALWAYS BE WITH HIS PEOPLE.
*Acts 11:19-21 gives this report on the early church:
19. Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
20. And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.
21. And THE HAND OF THE LORD was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.
*The Hand of the Lord was surely with the Christians in Acts 11. There is no doubt about, because vs. 21 says with certainty: "The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord."
*The Hand of the Lord was surely with those Christians. But is the Hand of the Lord with us today? Sometimes we might be tempted to doubt it, maybe because we don't see a great number turning to the Lord, or maybe because we are going through a terrible hardship.
*But think back to the early church, and let me ask you some questions. Acts 11:19 mentions Stephen the Deacon. He was stoned to death, murdered by the authorities for his strong witness for Jesus Christ. Was the Hand of the Lord with Stephen when he was stoned? There is no doubt about it, because in Acts 7:55, Stephen "being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God" to welcome him home.
*Was the Hand of the Lord with the early Christians in Acts 5, when a married couple tried to deceive the church, and had to die for their sin? We may not understand why all of that happened. But Hebrews 13:5 tells us that Jesus has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you.'' So we have to conclude that the Hand of the Lord was with the church on that day of severe judgment.
*Was the Hand of the Lord with them starting in Acts 5:17, when the Apostles were thrown in prison and beaten? The answer is yes. Was the Hand of the Lord with them in Acts 6:1, when there was fussing and complaining in the church? The answer is yes. Was the Hand of the Lord with them in Acts 8, when a great persecution arose against the church? Again, the answer is yes.
*Was the Hand of the Lord with the Apostle Paul when he was falsely imprisoned for two years. We have to say yes, because at the beginning of that ordeal, Acts 23:11 tells us that one night "the Lord stood by him and said, 'Be of good cheer, Paul; for as you have testified for Me in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness at Rome.'''
*In every hardship, trial and tribulation, the Hand of the Lord was with those Christians. And the Hand of the Lord is with us today. We can be most sure of this great truth, because again in Hebrews 13:5, Jesus Himself said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you.''
*Also Christians, I have to say that the Hand of the Lord is always with us, because we are in His Hand! As Jesus said in John 10:27-29:
27. "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
28. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
29. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand."
*Christians, the Hand of the Lord is with us today, and it always will be! Praise the Lord!

13. Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? Would ye stay for them from having husbands? Nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that THE HAND OF THE LORD is gone out against me.
8. 1 Samuel 5:1-7
1. And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
2. When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

14. If ye will fear the Lord, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the Lord your God:
15. But if ye will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then shall THE HAND OF THE LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.
12. 2 Samuel 24:11-18

13. So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? Or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? Or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? Now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

17. And David spake unto the Lord when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? Let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.

16. And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.
17. For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
18. And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: He will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.
15. 1 Chronicles 21:11-13
11. So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Choose thee
12. Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the Lord, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
