Jesus knew (cf. vv. 1, 18) His sovereign authority, His origin, and coming destiny; yet He voluntarily took the place of a slave, washing the feet of His disciples. His action contrasts sharply with their self-seeking (cf. Matt. 20:20–24; Mark 9:33–34; Luke 22:24–30) and pictures His whole ministry on earth
In 2 Pe 1:4 ‘to share in the very being of God,’ one may speak of ‘to share in what God is like’ or ‘to become in a measure like God.’ It is important, of course, to avoid the implication that people can become completely God.
