Unity with God
Unity with God
INTRODUCTION. Unity is a pressing need within the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Where there is unity there is strength. Jesus said a house divided against itself shall fall. Now unity and union are not the same. Unity: State of being one—as a body is one organism. Union: Act or instance of uniting two or more things into one organization.

A Song of Ascents, of David.
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Coming down upon the beard,
Even Aaron’s beard,
Coming down upon the edge of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon
Coming down upon the mountains of Zion;
For there the Lord commanded the blessing—life forever.
Psalm:133
Unity of faith, is an equal belief of the same truths of God, and possession of the grace of faith in like form and degree.
Unity of spirit, is the oneness which subsists between Christ and his saints, by which the same spirit dwells in both, and both have the same disposition and aims; and it is the oneness of christians among themselves, united under the same head, having the same spirit dwelling in them, and possessing the same graces, faith, love, hope, &c.
1. The state of being one; oneness. Unity may consist of a simple substance or existing being, as the soul; but usually it consists in a close junction of particles or parts, constituting a body detached from other bodies. Unity is a thing undivided itself, but separate from ever other thing.
2.Concord; conjunction; as a unity of proofs.
3. Agreement; uniformity; as unity of doctrine; unity of worship in a church.
4. In christian theology, oneness of sentiment, affection or behavior.
How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! .
I.THE CHURCH SHOULD HAVE UNITY.
5. In mathematics, the abstract expression for any unit whatsoever. The number 1 is unity, when it is not applied to any particular object; but a unit, when it is so applied.
I.THE CHURCH SHOULD HAVE UNITY.
A. Because the church is one—The body of Christ. , ; .
B. Since the church is one—if any member suffers, the whole body suffers. , .
C. The church as a body can only function properly when all members are working together. . Note v. 22. (all necessary.)
II.THE CHURCH CAN HAVE UNITY.
A.Because of the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. , .
1.Note the Spirit came when the church was in one accord. .
2.After He came—Note. . (v. 26).
B.Because Christ prayed that we have unity. , . God will answer Christ’s prayer.
III.HOW THE CHURCH CAN MAINTAIN THIS UNITY.
A.By faith.
B.By abiding in Christ and obeying His Word. , , .
C.By putting forth an effort
.
The effort is making sure that you are constantly fed by the word of God and in prayer. His will and kingdom being lived through your life by putting the flesh in subjection. Because the flesh is contrary to the will of God but by the Spirit you can make it submit and get in oneness or unity with Gods purpose.
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. Then He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.”
And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.” Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. Then He came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”
Matthew 26:36-
In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety. Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 5:
And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. When He arrived at the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
Luke 22:39-
