Sonora Smart-Dodd is the "mother" of Father's Day. In 1909, as she listened to a sermon about Mother's Day, she was inspired to begin a campaign to create a celebration that would recognize and honor the work done by her father and all fathers across the U.S.
President Lyndon B. Johnson recognized the third Sunday of June as Father's Day with a presidential proclamation in 1966.
• In 1972, President Richard Nixon officially declared the third Sunday in June as Father's Day in the United States.
The National Retail Federation estimates that over $8 billion will be spent on Father's Day gifts.
1 Australia and New Zealand celebrate Father's Day on the first Sunday in September and in Scandinavia, it's the second Sunday in November.
