Calming the wind and the sea - 4:35-41
What is the worst storm you've ever been through?
What are the different types of storms we can go through?
Emotional Storm
How did you get through?
Spiritual
What is it about a storm that causes fear?
What emotions go through you during a storm?
A. The crisis (4:35–38a)
A. The crisis (4:35–38a)
1. The stormy sea (): Jesus and the disciples suddenly encounter a furious squall while crossing the Sea of Galilee in a boat.
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.”
36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.
37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.
2. The sleeping Savior (): Jesus is asleep at the back of the boat.
38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
B. The cry (): Filled with fear, they shout to him: “Don’t you even care that we are going to drown?”

C. The calm (4:39–41)
1. The rebuke () : He rebukes the wind and sea, saying, “Quiet down!”
39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
2. The reproof () : Jesus chides the disciples for their lack of faith.
40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”
3. The reaction () : They are filled with awe at his power!
41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

How did the disciples react to this storm? And what did many of them do for a living?
Are you ever annoyed when it looks like God is sleeping and ignoring the situation that has "swamped" you and threatens to drown you?
Why do you think the disciples wake Jesus up?
Did they want Him to calm the storm or to take cover?
Why are the disciples still "terrified" even after Jesus calms the storm?
What did the disciples ask each other in verse 41?

:40. After their brush with death, Jesus doesn't comfort, but rather scolds His disciples.
Why is He so hard on them?
As soon as Jesus boards he sleeps. It is possible that Jesus meant to enter this storm as a test of the disciples' faith?
How would they have responded if they had had faith?
In what areas of your life are you tempted to respond with fear rather than faith?
Casting out a legion of demons - 5:1-20
Casting out a legion of demons - 5:1-20
If you could time travel to see Jesus as He ministered in Galilee, what is the one personal need you would ask Him to meet?
Jesus will meet the following needs:
Jesus will meet the following needs: MAN, ; WOMAN, ; CHILD, ,
Spiritual need — MAN, ;
Emotional & physical need — WOMAN, ;
Physical & spiritual — CHILD, ,
A. The despair (5:1–5): This man is continuously tormented by many demons.
A. The despair (5:1–5): This man is continuously tormented by many demons.
1. The man lives among the tombs ().
1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.
2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.
3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,
2. No one can keep him chained ().
3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,
4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.
3. He constantly screams out and hits himself with stones () .
5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
B. The deliverance (5:6–13): Jesus speaks to the evil spirits within the man.
B. The deliverance (5:6–13): Jesus speaks to the evil spirits within the man.
1. The panic of these demons (): In great fear they beg Jesus not to torment them before their time.
6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.
7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”
2. The plea of these demons (5:8–13)
a. The request (): The demons ask for permission to enter a large herd of pigs nearby.
9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”
10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.
11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,
12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.”
b. The results (): Jesus allows it, and the possessed pigs run into the lake and drown.
13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.
c. The release (): The man is set free!
8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
C. The disbelief (5:14–17): The pig owners and townspeople come running out to see what has happened.
C. The disbelief (5:14–17): The pig owners and townspeople come running out to see what has happened.
1. What they see (): They see the former madman now sitting, clothed, and in his right mind!
14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened.
15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs.
2. What they say () : They all urge Jesus to go away and leave them alone!
17 And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.
D. The desire (5:18–20)
D. The desire (5:18–20)
1. The request by the man () : He begs to be allowed to go with Jesus.
18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him.
2. The reply by the Messiah (): The Savior declines, asking the man to share his testimony with others.
19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
How did the demon possessed man respond to Jesus?
2. How did the demon possessed man respond to Jesus?
Why do you think Jesus allowed the demons to enter the pigs?
Why did the people beg him to leave? What can we learn from their response?
What do we learn from this passage about the Lord Jesus Christ ?
How do you apply this knowledge to your life today?

Healing the woman with a flow of blood and raising up a dead girl - 5:21-43

4. The commendation (): Jesus reassures the woman that her faith has brought about her healing!
34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
What kinds of doubts or feelings toward God may have arisen in those 12 years?
What lessons from God could she have learned during these 12 years?
Who alone could heal her?
Have you ever gone from pride, to hopelessness, to humility, to complete reliance on God?
What is the bad news? What is the good news?
Does God care more about our character or our comfort?
The Girl
The Girl
What questions would Jairus have had when his daughter died because Jesus tarried?
Will your trust Jesus, even if you never get your answers this side of heaven?

Lessons on Prayer from Jairus
Lessons on Prayer from Jairus
Boldness – don’t hint or beat and ask for big things in faith.
Humility – don’t be impertinent or demanding. We don’t deserve anything. So rely on His grace.
Politeness – Remember who you are coming before. Don’t tell. God is not our buddy or peer. Jairus was a fairly important person, but he didn’t come to Jesus as a peer.
