You are to regard only the Lord of Hosts as holy. Only He should be feared; only He should be held in awe.
Chapter 7 was a warning to Ahaz that he needed to place his confidence in God (don’t fear Israel, nor Syria and don’t place faith in Assyria)
Chapter 8 is a warning to the people over the exact same thing, but its given to the people of Judah
Isaiah’s warning to them can be seen in four phases
Foretelling- Things are about to change
Foretelling- Things are about to change
Then the Lord said to me, “Take a large piece of parchment and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
I have appointed trustworthy witnesses—Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.”
I was then intimate with the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. The Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz,
for before the boy knows how to call out father or mother, the wealth of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria will be carried off to the king of Assyria.”
Swift is the booty; quick is the prey.
Two hostile witnesses made record of this. Uriah was a priest faithful to the King; Zechariah was the King’s Father in law.
This is similar to a magician who has someone write something down, then tricks the audience into believing he knew what it was. In this case its no trick.
These things will happen before the son is able to call out mother or father.
Imminence is in view… When Jesus comes it will be quick.
Flood- Assyria is coming like a flood
Flood- Assyria is coming like a flood
The Lord spoke to me again:
Because these people rejected the slowly flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoiced with Rezin and the son of Remaliah,
the Lord will certainly bring against them the mighty rushing waters of the Euphrates River— the king of Assyria and all his glory. It will overflow its channels and spill over all its banks.
It will pour into Judah, flood over it, and sweep through, reaching up to the neck; and its spreading streams will fill your entire land, Immanuel!
Band together, peoples, and be broken; pay attention, all you distant lands; prepare for war, and be broken; prepare for war, and be broken.
Devise a plan; it will fail. Make a prediction; it will not happen. For God is with us.
Judah is not satisfied with the peaceful waters that flowed with Siloam (same word)
Judah’s King had gone and made an alliance with the King of Assyria (which would be like allying with Hitler- the alliance was only as good as it met Hitler’s need and then you became the target)
Since Judah had aligned itself and trusted in Assyria, it could expect Assyria to “flood them” up to the neck. (Isaiah’s other son’s name meant a remnant would remain)
How many times have we opened ourselves up to all kinds of problems simply because we abandon a close and clean walk with the lord and start trusting in other things, other people, or priorities?
Fear- Give reverence to the Lord
Fear- Give reverence to the Lord
For this is what the Lord said to me with great power, to keep me from going the way of this people:
Do not call everything an alliance these people say is an alliance. Do not fear what they fear; do not be terrified.
You are to regard only the Lord of Hosts as holy. Only He should be feared; only He should be held in awe.
He will be a sanctuary; but for the two houses of Israel, He will be a stone to stumble over and a rock to trip over, and a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Many will stumble over these; they will fall and be broken; they will be snared and captured.
I was busy writing this outline in a hotel lobby in Huntsville. I looked up and CBS News had Al Gore on pushing Climate Change. Fear-mongering to make a dollar. And people look him and take him seriously.
Again, I believe we should manage well the Earth that God put us on. But this is my Father’s World
This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;
His hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker’s praise.
This is my Father’s world: He shines in all that’s fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass;
He speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father’s world. O let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.
This is my Father’s world: the battle is not done:
Jesus Who died shall be satisfied,
And earth and Heav’n be one.
Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
God’s got this, and He’s surely going to take care of me.
Follow- Obey the Word of the Lord
Follow- Obey the Word of the Lord
Bind up the testimony. Seal up the instruction among my disciples.
I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob. I will wait for Him.
Here I am with the children the Lord has given me to be signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of Hosts who dwells on Mount Zion.
When they say to you, “Consult the spirits of the dead and the spiritists who chirp and mutter,” shouldn’t a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?
To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, there will be no dawn for them.
They will wander through the land, dejected and hungry. When they are famished, they will become enraged, and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God.
They will look toward the earth and see only distress, darkness, and the gloom of affliction, and they will be driven into thick darkness.
Here God rules out the need to trust in all the fluky stuff people trust, and simply cling to His Word in Faith filled obedience, believing that He alone should be consulted for the affairs of life.
