Acts 13:36 NKJV
“For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption;
Today we find the Apostle Paul in the city of Antioch
A great ministry will take place but a great persecution against Paul and Barnabas arose and they we expelled from the
The Apostle was invited to preach in the local synagogue and like always begins to reveal the hidden treasure of the Word of God in regards to the history of the people
Half way through his discourse Paul makes this astounding statement about the life of King David
life of King David
“He served” his generation which was God’s will for his life
The word here is huperatao which is much more than just serving
To be a slave; to worship; to minister; Helpful; Constantly in service; To attend to
The ancient Greek understood the significance of this activity and attributed it to those given in the service of the gods
The saying of the Pythagoreans was - to serve characterizes someone, whether man, god or divine being, in terns of the fact that he stands and acts in the service of a higher will and is fully at the disposal of this will
It’s use is not always in reference to service to the gods but in the military
The shield bearers or front-line weapons bearers were referred to in the same for they needed always to be at the ready to respond to the command of the officer and to react without hesitation or thought
It refers to one who is charged to carry out the orders of another
From the root word “rower”
It is not selfish, it seeks not its own welfare or safety…it simply does
David is described as a man who fulfilled God’s will for his life by being this kind of servant
Was he a perfect man then?
No way! But he was a wiling man
1 Samuel 13:13–14 NKJV
And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
A man after God’s own heart
That relationship was cultivated in the daily grind of David’s life which manifested itself in David recognizing and acknowledging God’s work in his life
1 Samuel 17:34–37 NKJV
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
David had a confidence that God was directing his path
1 Samuel 24:1–7 NKJV
Now it happened, when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, “Take note! David is in the Wilderness of En Gedi.” Then Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel, and went to seek David and his men on the Rocks of the Wild Goats. So he came to the sheepfolds by the road, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to attend to his needs. (David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave.) Then the men of David said to him, “This is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it seems good to you.’ ” And David arose and secretly cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. Now it happened afterward that David’s heart troubled him because he had cut Saul’s robe. And he said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.” So David restrained his servants with these words, and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul got up from the cave and went on his way.
Not only did he have a solid relationship but he recognized God’s hand at work in his life
So in tune was David with the heart of God that he felt guilty for even touching the Lord’s anointed
But that wasn’t all that was working in David’s life
He had become complacent in his later days and fell victim to the lust of his heart
James 1:12–15 NKJV
Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
2 Samuel 11:1–5 NKJV
It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house. And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.”
It was from this point on that David’s life continued to reap the consequences of his sin
He had his best friend killed, the baby died, the nation suffered, and his family disintegrated into chaos
1 Samuel 17:34-37
Yet in we read
Psalm 51:1–4 NKJV
Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.
Genesis 1:1 NKJV
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
You see the key is having a heart towards God which leads you to repentance
Acts says that he completed God’s will for his life even n the midst of his greatest failure
The word will hs two diametrically opposed meanings
1 a impulsive and unconscious desire - this is a description of the carnal life - undisciplined and self-seeking
2 a rational and conscious action - this is the Spirit life of the believer - there is an inclination or natural instinct or incline to a life of holiness
It means a resolution of the Spirit and a desire or inclination to rational behavior
This is what we see in the life of David in the cave and as he laments his actions with Bathsheba
Joshua 24:14–15 NKJV
“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Maybe you feel you have been disqualified from serving God; maybe you think that you committed the unpardonable sin; maybe you think God is through with you
All it takes is repentance!
Leave what is in Egypt behind and follow the Lord into the promised land!
