Purpose?: To exhort people to be true disciples of Jesus.

I. Christ’s Future Suffering (21)

Matthew 16:21 NASB95
21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.
Matthew 16:21–28 NASB95
21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” 24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds. 28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

A. Go to Jerusalem

Active - He could not avoid the suffering.

71.34 δεῖa: to be that which must necessarily take place, often with the implication of inevitability—‘to be necessary, must.’

B. Suffering

Active - Jesus did the suffering caused by the actions of the orthodox leaders.
1. Elders = presbytery
1. Elders = presbytery
1. Elders = presbytery
2. Chief Priests - Sadducees
3. Scribes - Pharisees

53.94 γραμματεύςa, έως m: a recognized expert in Jewish law (including both canonical and traditional laws and regulations)—‘one who is learned in the Law, expert in the Law’ or ‘… Law of Moses.’ πῶς λέγουσιν οἱ γραμματεῖς ὅτι ὁ Χριστὸς υἱὸς Δαυίδ ἐστιν; ‘how can the experts of the Law say that the Messiah will be the descendant of David?’ Mk 12:35.

All of these made up the Sanhedrin or the ruling court of the Jews.

C. Killed

C. Killed
Passive - an action done against Him the religious leaders.

C. Killed

D. Raised

Passive - an action done to Him by the Father.
Jesus must go, He must suffer, He must be killed, He must be raised. These were divine, ageless musts. No plan B. Why must He go?
Because men are sinners
Because of the need for blood. The righteousness of God must be satisfied
Because of the righteousness of God that must be satisfied
Because the prophets had promised it.

II Peter’s Opposition (22-23)

Matthew 16:22–23 NASB95
22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”

A. Peter’s Rebuke (22)

He physically grabbed Jesus and pulled off to the side.

B. Christ’s Response to Peter (23)

The Gospel of Matthew, Volume 2 The Great Rebuke (Matthew 16:20–3)

We must try to catch the tone of voice in which Jesus spoke. He certainly did not say it with a snarl of anger in his voice and a blaze of indignant passion in his eyes. He said it like a man wounded to the heart, with poignant grief and a kind of shuddering horror.

1. Name
Peter began to rebuke Jesus but didn’t get to finish because Jesus cuts Peter off.
Just like Satan’s temptation in the desert which was to take a short cut to the kingdom.
Peter goes from the prime apostle to the tool of the tempter, from “Blessed” to “Satan”
Was it too strong? No, it was a hellish idea (S. Lewis Johnson) that Peter was pushing. His intentions were good, but the outcome was diabolical
2. Offense
3. We don’t like to be rebuked, even by the Word of God. When we act out of our flesh rather than the Word of God, we too become Satan = Adversary of Jesus.
Proverbs 27:6 NASB95
Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.
We must learn that there is pain in the discipleship process.

III. Christ’s Principles of Discipleship (24-28)

Matthew 16:
matthew 16:24-28
Matthew 16:24–28 NASB95
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds. “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

A. (24-26)

Matthew 16:24–28 NASB95
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.

A. If You Want It (24)

Matthew 16:24–26 NASB95
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Matthew 16:24 NASB95
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.

Hebrews 13:13 NASB95
So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach.
Take up Christ’s cross not our crimes.
Hebrews
1 Corinthians 4:9 NASB95
For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men.
1 Corinthians 4:9

3. Follow Jesus

Taking a trip - Say goodbye to friends (deny self), pick up your belongings (take up your cross), and take the trip (follow Jesus).

B. Why You Should Want (25-28)

C.
Matthew 16:26–28 NASB95
26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds. 28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”
Matthew 16:27–28 NASB95
For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds. “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”
Matthew 16:25–28 NASB95

Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds. 28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

1. Because You Will Find Life

Matthew 16:

2. Because It Is Profitable

3. Because of the Reward
