As we continue to look at , and Christ as he comforts his disciples we come to a very important subject.
One that has been asked by many.
Is Christ Enough.
When our heart is troubled, Is Christ enough to relieve out fears and confusion.
When our Heart is broken, is Christ enough to comfort us and heal.
When we are sick and weak, is Christ enough to sustain us.
In Phillip told Jesus...
John 14:
Jesus, we could bear all of this, if you just show us God!
They had heard him speak of God as his father, of his Love, His Guidance and now that Jesus has told them that he is going away.
They felt that they needed something more.
Johns Gospel tells us more about Philip than any of the other accounts.
Remember, Philip was the one who after Christ came and said “Follow Me” when and found Nathaniel and convinced him to come see Jesus saying
John 1:
Then when Jesus was about to feed the multitude in , it was Philip that Christ turned to and asked “Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” and his answer was “Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient”
The next time we see Philip, is in when the greeks approached him wanting to see Jesus!
We do not know a lot about Philip, but the places that he is mentioned show him to be a very practical man.
He was matter of fact but declaring that Jesus was the messiah to Nathanael.
He was thinking of the bottom line what asked about resources to fead the multitude.
And when those from outside of Israel asked to see him, he was careful, asking Christ first before bringing them.
His practicality is seen as well in our text today, As he tells Jesus “Show us the Father, and it will suffice”.
Having Christ before him wasn’t enough.
He needed more to satisfy.
When we are not
And then Christ answers him and says, Philip, I am more than enough
As one man said “Whoever is not satisfied with Christ alone, strives for something beyond absolute perfections”
This Morning we ask ourselves this questions “Is Christ Enough?”
He is Sufficient in His Power
Jesus explains that to see Him, was to see the Father.
Look at his answer “Have I been so long time with you and yet hast thou not known me!” His words hold the same power as the God’s word.
His Works were of the same power of The works of God
He says
Exercised the Gospel
1 Corinthians 1:22-
Christ came with a mission, not to set up his kingdom in Jerusalem - but in our hearts.
Not to removed the Roman oppression from his people, but the oppression of sin on the hearts of mankind.
We see the power of Christ Exercised in the Gospel, the Death Buriel and Resurrection of Christ.
Of His
Experienced in His Grace
2 Corinthians 12:9
Paul had an affliction, we don’t know what it was though many have speculated.
He called it a thorn in the flesh.
And he prayed 3 times for God to take it away.
But the answer was not the one that many of us would have hoped for.
Instead of healing, sometimes God gives Grace.
He is Sufficient in His Provision
John 14:12-14
His Provision For our Service
1 Peter
His Provision For our Supplications
This not a free ticket to get whatever you desire.
Notice he says if you ask anything in may name.
This isn’t just simply tagging “In Christ Name Amen” at the end of each prayer.
In that culture, if you asked something in someone else name, you are saying that your request is within the will and is desired by that person.
So To pray “In Jesus Name” means to align your will with his will, your desire, with His desire.
When you do that, Christ will Answer!
Romans 8:
He is Sufficient in His Presence
John 14:
Though this physical presence of God in Christ would be leaving them soon, Christ promised that His presence would still remain.
This promise would be realized through the Holy spirit.
Christ often describes the spirit as the Comforter.
The Paraklete.
The one who comes along side of.
The Indwelling of The Spirit
Eph 3:16
The Instruction of The Spirit
The disciples were discouraged, they were troubled.
They were afraid.
But Christ comforted them, not only with the news that one day they would be home with him in heaven, but that right here, right now he was more than sufficient to carry them through whatever they would be facing.
His Power Is Sufficient, His Provision Is Sufficient, His Presence Is Sufficient.
And Today, no matter what life has through at you.
No matter what it is that is troubling your heart this morning, The same Christ that was Sufficient then, is the same Christ who is more than sufficient today.
