Learning to listen:
TO our need for help from God 1st and from others around us
Israelites in battle victory depended upon Moses keeping his arms up but as he got tired he had to lean on his brother Aarron & friend Hur
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me.
God meant: "Remember how I demonstrated my love for you and my incomparable power on your behalf! Trust in me now, and look to no other source for help."
Therefore, when the ten commandments begin, "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me" (, ), God meant: "Remember how I demonstrated my love for you and my incomparable power on your behalf! Trust in me now, and look to no other source for help." The ten commandments are based on a call for faith in the God of the exodus, just like the moral teachings of the NT are based on a call for faith in the Lord of Good Friday and Easter.

just like the moral teachings of the NT are based on a call for faith in the Lord of Good Friday and Easter.
1. God gave the Law to reveal His standard of absolute righteousness
For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.
Jesus summed up the entire Law with two points
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
The 10 Commandments elaborate on the two great commandments
1st 3/4 on love for God:
No other God’s before Him
No idols
Don’t take Lord’s Name in vain
remember the sabbath to keep it holy
Last love for others:
honor mom & dad
don’t murder
do not commit adultery
don’t steal
do not bear false witness
don’t covet
The sermon on the mount reveals that God judges us on the heart level not on external obedience
some of you haven’t murdered anyone but
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
others might say never commited adultery
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
THE LAW WAS GIVEN IN PART SO THAT WE WOULD SEE OUR SINFULNESS & BE DRAWN TO A SAVIOR
Why did God give the law/commandments?
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
We are sinful by nature standing before a Holy and Righteous God
we need a Savior to redeem us
So that we would see our need of a Savior
2. So that we would love one another; as Christ loved us — Different than the World
Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Love is not something that we can muster up but is something that is given from God
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.
How will we obtain it ?
What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,
Through Faith

You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
