It was a new day for the disciples
Imagine them going into Jerusalem … Were they excited?
Fearful? Uncertain? Pumped up?
Were they caught up in the joy of the moment?
Or did the words that Christ had spoken to them of rejection and death and betrayal haunt them?
Yeah it was a new day … But there is still risk, fear, uncertainty.
Maybe your new day is a new job … a new stage in life … a new neighbourhood … now opportunities
It might be illness; unemployment; divorce; promotion; pregnancy; legal struggles; retirement;
New days … new days where things have changed and nothing is the same are not all times of YEEEEEE HAAAAA
New opportunities are often causes of fear
New challenges can leave us wallowing in uncertainty
Daunting decisions can have us almost doubled over with worry
Sometimes new days leave us with an uncertainty of what the day will hold and weather we will survive to the next day.
Mount of Olives – 300 feet higher than Jerusalem;
· Had been a place of Worship –
· 586 BC Ezekiel had a vision of the Glory of God departing from Jerusalem and settling on Mount of Olives – 11:23
· Prophet Zechariah … Identifies Mount of Olives as the Site of the Revelation of the Messiah –
· To be place of The lord’s Ascension –

Arranging Transportation:

· 2 Disciples Chosen (not sure which ones – v: 29)
· Go into the village – NIV – The Village ahead of you - ??
· Retrieve a Colt – Greek = Polos – Word can mean either a young horse or s donkey – Donkey more common in Palestine
· tells us that it was tied up with its mother.
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!

Critics Corner:

Behold, your king is coming to you;
Righteous and having salvation is he,
Humble and mounted on a donkey,
On a colt, the foal of a donkey.
· Colt attests to Jesus’ messianic status
· Kings prerogative to commandeer beasts of burden
· It had never been ridden –
· Unbroken beast of burden regarded as sacred – ;
· Appropriate for king – King’s horse only ridden by one … the King
· He rides into Jerusalem on a donkey on which no one has ever ridden
· 23:53 – Buried in a tomb in which no one has been laid
· If anyone asks … The Lord Needs it …
· The Greek of this can be translated “It’s Lord has need of it”
· He is the colt’s lord … master …
· Kellers Sermon
· George Whitefield, the old Anglican preacher, used to say in his sermons, “Do you know when you get near animals why they bark at you and growl at you and scream at you and then run away? Because they know you have a quarrel with their Master.” They’re afraid.
· But Jesus gets up on this little colt, and what happens? Does he break it? He doesn’t break it. He heals it of its fear. I’ll put it this way.
This little colt is absolutely fearless in the face of a screaming crowd when Jesus is in its saddle, when Jesus is in the saddle of its life.
When Jesus Christ gets on top, when Jesus becomes the ruler, when Jesus gets into the driver’s seat, his power doesn’t break you. He doesn’t coerce you; he heals you.
· There’s a place where Paul says, “If God is for me, who can be against me?” The gospel comes into your life and says, “What in the world are you afraid of?” To the degree that I have Jesus at the center of my life, to that degree I am free from fear of anything: fear of death, fear of failure, fear of criticism, fear of sickness, fear of anything. That is what utterly transforms you and changes you in every way.
· Jesus Christ when he comes into your life says, “I want absolute authority. I want absolute obedience. I want you to totally submit to me.”
· The Donkey was rightfully his by virtue of creation –
· Knowing this … was all the earthly owner needed to know.
· APPL. Are we willing to let King Jesus stake His claim anywhere He wishes in our lives?
· Luke’s account has crowd setting Jesus on the Colt – Suggestive of enthronement
· ;
· the story not simply of Jesus’ royal entry into Jerusalem, but the return of the king, who in David fled Jerusalem in defeat and sorrow, and in the “son of David” (18:38) enters Jerusalem in triumph and joy.
V:38 Quotation –

· And their quote of
· They knew He was coming as King
· They DID not understand what KIND of King
· Perhaps the donkey should have given them a clue
· He didn’t come to have a coup d’état and over throw the Govt.
· The donkey was a spiritual statement … not a political one.
· He comes the same way into our line of sight …
·
· He comes with Gentleness and Peace
· The Shouts of were reserved for the coming King
· was a promise of Messiah
· Messiah was Royalty
· Do the Math

An Emotional Outlook:

The Lord in HIS temple:

Application for Today:

(3 Questions)

1.What do I need to surrender CONTROL of? (28-40)

Here - Jesus is Messiah/King

He calls the Shots

The Issue at stake here is to whom is my loyalty directed

2.What BREAKS my HEART? (41-44)

Here we have Jesus weeping over Jerusalem … over their lost opportunity
When we read this we need to ask where are our priorities … what concerns us … what drives us … what makes us cry?
Robert Pierce - Founder of World Vision “Let my heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God”
Hillsong wrote a worship song … Title Hosanna: Lyrics:
Hosanna Hosanna Hosanna in the highest Heal my heart and make it clean Open up my eyes to the things unseen Show me how to love Like You have loved me Break my heart for what breaks Yours Everything I am For Your kingdom’s cause As I walk from earth into eternity
Heal my heart and make it clean Open up my eyes to the things unseen Show me how to love Like You have loved me Break my heart for what breaks Yours Everything I am For Your kingdom’s cause As I walk from earth into eternity
I see a near revival Stirring as we pray and seek We’re on our knees We’re on our knees
Then Casting Crowns Wrote the Song “Jesus Friend of Sinners” --- Lyrics
Heal my heart and make it clean Open up my eyes to the things unseen Show me how to love Like You have loved me Break my heart for what breaks Yours Everything I am For Your kingdom’s cause As I walk from earth into eternity
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers Let our hearts be led by mercy Help us reach with open hearts and open doors Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours
Do we weep over a lost person dying without Christ?

3.What TRASH do I need to take out? (45-48)

Here we have the Lord of the Temple in HIS temple
He is clearing out the temple … What Gives him the right … It’s HIS
FB Meyer Sin is the same way; you don’t want it near your life. F.B. Myer wrote, “This is the bitterest of all, to know that suffering need not have been; that it has resulted from indiscretion and inconsistency; that it is the harvest of one’s own sowing; that the vulture which feeds on the vitals is a nestling of one’s own rearing. Ah me! This is pain!”
