Does Jesus Understands Me (Lesson 2)
Does Jesus Understands Me (Lesson 2)
No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made.
And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”
A very good question.
Does good deeds get you into heaven?
Most people feel like they do good deeds.
Other people feel like they need to get themselves together so they can start doing good.
The question shows that he thought he could do something good enough to merit eternal life.
The question shows that he thought he could do something good enough to merit eternal life.
The Grace New Testament Commentary 9. Instruction concerning Wealth (19:16–26)
The question shows that he thought he could do something good enough to merit eternal life.
And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”
Jesus said, “Why do you ask me about what is good?” (What stands out to you about Jesus answer)
Jesus answers the question with a question.
It’s not about what is good but about the only one who is good.
“If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” - very interesting statement.
He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,
He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Matthew 19

These commands focus on external and observable behavior that others can evaluate.
Matthew 19
The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?”
The New American Commentary: Matthew 1. True Discipleship versus Harsher Condemnation for the Jewish Leaders (19:1–22:46)
Which ones can save a person? Jesus focuses on the second table of the Decalogue, presenting the Fifth through Ninth Commandments in the order six, seven, eight, nine, five (cf. Exod 20:12–16 and Deut 5:16–20). He appends Lev 19:18, the second half of his own twofold summary of the law, which he will present in 22:37–39. All of these commands focus on external and observable behavior that others can evaluate.
All these (I) have kept.
What do (I) still lack?
Matthew
Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
“If you would be perfect.” - If you think you have all together… I have one more commandment that is more internal.
Go, Sell what you possess....
Give to the poor.
If you do this you will have treasure in heaven.
Then come, follow me.
Could you give up what you possess?
When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
Jesus knows that
Does Jesus understand me?
Jesus knows that we have something that we covet… We all have something that is hard to let go.
Jesus is knows that our good will never be good enough.
He is not asking for us to be good because it is impossible.
He’s is just asking us to come and follow “The Only Who is Good.”
And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
“Rich Person”
“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
