The word in you Sanctifies.

“So that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word. Ephesians 5:26

The word Sanctify here is the Greek word hagiazo (hag-ee-ad'-zo) meaning to make Holy. Also, it means to purify or to consecrate. Notice that Sanctification makes one Holy. And how does this happen?

By the washing of the water of the word of God.

Let’s look at Romans 6:1-4

“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.”

Notice putting the old man to death in baptism. Washing… This washing takes place in two ways:

1. The Blood of Jesus cleans us from our sin.

“Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate.” Hebrews 13:12

“But if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7

The Blood of Jesus cleanses us and washes us from our Guilt, Shame, Pain and Sin.

“Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.” Isaiah 1:18

What can wash a person’s mind from the sin of their past? The word and the blood.

What can wash a person from Shame and Pain? The word and the blood.

What can wash away the Guilt? The water of the Word of God and the blood of Jesus.

2. The word of God washes from daily Defilement

“Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.” John 17:17

That’s why the word of God is so important. It is truth, and it is pure and if it gets in you, it will change you.

It will change the way you believe.

It will change the way you think.

It will change the way you behave.

“You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.” John 15:3

Notice already clean.

Why? Because the word. This word must be applied and read daily.

Matthew 6:11 says, “Give us this day our daily bread.”

“Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1

The court of the Tabernacle of Moses contained two pieces for cleansing. One approaching God must first pass by the altar and then he must pass by the lavor. (Exodus 30:17-21)

The altar required a sacrifice of blood; the lavor was a washing with water. Mirrors in the basin reflected the image of the one washing. James 1:23

The lavor is a type of the Word.

Sanctify also means “to set apart for a sacred use.”

The name Saint means “Holy one.” A saint is a believer. Ephesians 1:1-4

The believer is to be set apart from the world. Set apart to holiness.

“But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;

because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.” 1 Peter 1:15-16

The purpose of sanctification is to be transformed into the likeness of His Son Jesus.

“For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren.” Romans 8:29

Did you know that the Word in you is the mark of a true Disciple?

So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine.” John 8:31

John 14:23 shows us two things about keeping the word.

“Jesus answered and said to him, “ If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.” John 14:23

1. Keeping God’s Word is the test of disciple’s Love for God.

2. Through keeping the Word, the Father and the Son come in to abide.

The word in you sanctifies.

What is Sanctification?

Sanctification is the process of being set apart for God's work and being conformed to the image of Christ. This conforming to Christ involves the work of the person. But it is still God working in the believer to produce more of a godly character and life in the person who has already been justified.

In Romans chapter 6, we see 4 steps in sanctifcation.

You must die to sin. (verse2)

May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?

2. You are united with Christ in His death. (verse 5)

3. You have been raised with Christ in Life, His Life. (verse 5 and 8)

Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,

But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.

Knowing the fact on our position with Christ give us a basis upon which to stand in faith.
