Introduction
Introduction
thanks began to happen that night in the Garden, the arrest of Jesus and them bringing him to the house of the High priest for trial late at night which violates their own law.
Share maybe briefly about Peter’s denail
Share lastly...what we looked at last week with the trial of Jesus before Pilate.
Now we move on the the rest of Chapter 15.
Verse 16....
16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion.
Pilate has condemned Jesus to death trying to keep the peace with the Jewish leaders. They wanted Jesus out of the way, they have persisted and are going to get their wish. Jesus is led away from Pilate and the people.
They take Jesus in the the inner palace, where the guard, or battalion quarters were located . This has long been identified with the Antonia fortress on the northwest corner of the Temple mount.
This large fortress allow immediate access to the Temple mount in case of a disturbance and suppress it quickly.
And there they began to do terrible things to Jesus.
look at verses 18-20
17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
What do you think about when you read this account of how they treated Jesus?
They mocked him without a doubt
They mocked him without a doubt
The placed imperial colors about him, not believing He is a king, they dressed him in a cloth of purple draped around about him.
They twisted a mock crown around his head, those thorns were pushed all the way down upon him until they struck the skull, it produces a lot of bleeding and makes the person look terrible.
The placed imperial colors about him, not believing He is a king, they dressed him in a cloth of purple draped around about him.
But that wasn’t all they did to our Lord..... I cannot imagine all they did to him that morning before the crucifixion.
The beat him and spat upon him, they then took the purple cloth from him and dressed him again in His own clothes.
Finally they led him away to be crucified.
Now consider this person Simon of Cyrene… look at verse 21
21 And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.
Mark 15;
We get a lot of information about this man who is commanded to help Jesus this day, can you imagine, and this man would never forget Jesus.
Now according to Jewish and Roman custom, people had to be taken outside the city walls to be put to death.
Q. But here is Simon, is he someone who knows Jesus, does he follow Jesus or is he a gentile proselyte to the Jewish faith and has come to worship since it is the time of the passover?
What do you think?
Regardless there is some thogutht that he might follow Jesus after the fact.
Now tells us this ...
13 And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together.
13 Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord; also his mother, who has been a mother to me as well.
Many think that this Rufus is one of the children of Simon mentioned in the gospel of Mark. and perhaps His mother ministered to Paul as well.
Now are scholars 100 on this…no but they think it is very likely it is the same person.
Regardless if a person was deemed unable to or to weak to carry their cross, they (roman soldiers) would grab someoene to help, this time it is Simon.
mark 15:21-32
22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.
Now right off the bat some MSS omit verse 28, i am not sure why....
V 28 And so the Scripture was fulfilled that says: And He was counted among outlaws” and that is a pull from
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Question.....
Now why did they offer wine and myrrh to Jesus? It was like a sedative, it help them as they were about to be nailed to the cross.
So they took his garments, casting lots for them, to see who would win his cloths. No need to let them go to waste i guess .
But, sadly they crucified Jesus between two thieves. This also point back to
Now lets see what else was happening… verses 29-32
29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
Mark 15:29-
Many more passed by, mocking him, saying all manner of bad things and yes, even one of criminals who was crucified with him sad things to him.
Many more passed by, mocking him, saying all manner of bad things and yes, even one of criminals who was crucified with him sad things to him.
I think that is all that needs to be said about that section....
Now verses 33-41
33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
40 There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.
What do we see here:
Darkess, Jesus crying out....what does it all mean?
Let me share some passages with you from the Old Testament..
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
Psalm 22”1
2 but your iniquities have made a separation
between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not hear.
Isaiah 59:21
21 And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! 13 You who are of purer eyes than to see evil
and cannot look at wrong,
why do you idly look at traitors
and remain silent when the wicked swallows up
the man more righteous than he?
We know and understand that sin separates us from God, and it did with Jesus as well. God did not abandon the son, God was right there but in Sin he could not fully sense him. For once Jesus was exactly like lost humanity, made like the in every way yet without sin, but here talking our sin.... upon himself.
Now verses 37-39 are the most wonderful to me....
37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
What do we see?
Two acts.... 1. one because of Jesus, we were no longer in need of a priest, we have access to our God because the curtain of the temple has been torn town
2. The great confess… after seeing it all… the soldier,
Now in these next two verses we see who was there. They are recorded for all time to see.
40 There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.
Mark 15:40-4
and finally
Verses 42-47
42 And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
What stands out to you in this passage?
Jospeh and we also know Nicodemus. they received permission that they be given the body of Jesus.
Pilate was surprised that he had already passed, and gave the order to give the body of Jesus to Jospeh.
Jospeh had to hurry, why>
Lastly the women saw where he was laid…
16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion.
