- We all have unique contexts
- Think about your past, present and future
- We all have unique contexts
- Ultimately we, as believers, all have the same past, present and future
- Summary of Colossians 1-2

Text for today
1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
- Prayer
Verse 1 & 2
Verse 1 & 2
- “If then” is not a question, Paul is making the assumption they are Christians, could also say “Because.”
- Indicative and imperative
- Indicative: sign or indication of something
- Imperative: authoritative command of vital importance
- What is it to be raised with Christ?
- In union with Him through His and our resurrection
- We were already dead spiritually
- We are already
- Spiritual deadness is humanity’s condition by nature
- Four reasons
- This is seen in 4 ways
1. Spiritual deadness is the universal consequence of sin
- Spiritual deadness is linked to physical death
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
-
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Rom
- Spiritual deadness is the universal consequence of sin
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.
2. Spiritual deadness is confirmed in the law
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
-
19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God.
3. Spiritual deadness is evidenced in the human mind
6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.
4. Spiritual deadness is evidenced in the human body

4. Spiritual deadness is evidenced in the human body
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
**A spiritually dead person CANNOT please God**
8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Only God can make something dead into something alive
Only God can make something dead into something alive
Only God can make something dead into something alive
50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
- When we are made alive by God we call on Him through repentance and belief of the Gospel
**This is the moment of our JUSTIFICATION**
From DEATH to LIFE...
- Only Christ can make what is de
From past to present...
BECAUSE WE HAVE REPENTED AND BELIEVED THE GOSPEL WE SHOULD.....
Seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
**
Seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
- Three things we should seek
- What are things that we should seek?
- To seek heavenly things is to set your affections on them
“Upon the wings of affection the heart soars upwards, and is carried forth towards spiritual and divine objects.” - Matthew Henry
- By our union and communion with Christ we have been justified, are being sanctified and will be glorified
- Through this union we make heaven our scope and aim
- We may live on earth but we belong in heaven
- We keep this focus because Christ is seated at God’s right hand
- Christ being seated at God’s right hand is known by three pieces of evidence
1. The hope of the Gospel
5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel,
- He is making intercession for us
2. The image of the invisible God
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
col 1:
3. The preeminence of Christ over all
16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind,
col 1:
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
- Christ possesses all
- How do we seek the things that are above?
- Paul tells us in verse 2 to “set our minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
- To set your mind on something is to set your affections upon it
“Upon the wings of affection the heart soars upwards, and is carried forth toward spiritual and divine objects.” - Matthew Henry
- To love and desire heavenly things is, by contrast, to see earthly things as contrary to things of heaven
- Paul gives us good examples of earthly and heavenly things to consider
The earthly
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
col 3:5-
The heavenly
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
How do we keep from getting lost in the wilderness of our sinful thoughts?

Verses 3 & 4
Verses 3 & 4
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
- “For you have died” points back to the moment we identified ourselves with Christ through believer’s baptism
- If we were already dead how can we die again?
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
rom 6:24
Rom.
- As a publicly professing Christian we align ourselves with Christ through this means of grace through obedience and a commitment to die daily to our sin and live for Christ.
“and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
- Christ has hidden our lives FOR us, not FROM us
- He has hidden them in the most secure hiding place that exists
- We may live here on earth, but we BELONG in heaven
“When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
- “your life” is repeated
- Christ is the source of life itself
- To be in possession of Christ is to possess life
- To not possess Christ is to possess only death
- The fulfillment of Christ’s greatest promise will reveal our hidden lives
- We will be glorified in Ch
