ONE SACRIFICE FOR SINS
For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins? But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says,
“Sacrifice and offering You have not desired,
But a body You have prepared for Me;
In whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have taken no pleasure.
“Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come
(In the scroll of the book it is written of Me)
To do Your will, O God.’ ”
After saying above, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have not desired, nor have You taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second. By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet. For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,
“This is the covenant that I will make with them
After those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws upon their heart,
And on their mind I will write them,”
He then says,
“And their sins and their lawless deeds
I will remember no more.”
Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.

INRODUCTION
The writer of Hebrews continues his teaching about the differences between the sacrificial system under the Old Covenant and the sacrifice of Jesus under the New Covenant. Many folks have a difficult time with the book of Hebrews because it was primarily written for the Jewish people. We might ask, If this is true, why should Gentiles take time to study something written to the Jews? It is important because we have many today who do not believe the blood atonement of Jesus is enough to keep us saved once we invite Jesus into our hearts. If people would study the Word rather than accepting the doctrines of men, there would be a lot less confusion, especially as it relate to being given eternal life by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. He alone was able to do what the Old Covenant was unable to do when He offered one sacrifice for sins.
JESUS OFFERED A PLEASING SACRIFICE
1 For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near.
Holman New Testament Commentary: Hebrews & James 1. Permanent in Contrast to Old Testament Sacrifices (vv. 1–4)
The Old Testament law had impressive ceremonies supported by centuries of tradition. It preserved an awareness of divine holiness and revealed the need for atonement. Nevertheless, the repetition of offerings and sacrifices on the annual Day of Atonement never brought the worshipers into a permanent relationship with God. Why? Old Testament sacrifices reminded of sin but did not remove it.
We must continually remember the Old Testament sacrificial system was a shadow of “only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things.” Whenever the reality comes, in this instance the cross of Jesus, the shadow becomes irrelevant. A shadow or a form can never take away sins.

The Old Testament Sacrificial system would have continued had the blood of animals been sufficient to cleanse the worshipers.
3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year.

The Bible declares the impossibility of the blood of animals to take away sins.

God had no pleasure in the sacrificing of animals for sins. God’s pleasure was in the death of His son on the cross. Listen to the prophetic words of Isaiah.
5 Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says, “Sacrifice and offering You have not desired, But a body You have prepared for Me;
10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
Isaiah 53:10-
Jesus offered a pleasing sacrifice to the Father because His blood accomplished what the blood of animals could not.
6 In whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have taken no pleasure.

7 “Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come (In the scroll of the book it is written of Me) To do Your will, O God.’ ”
As it is written the Old Testament, Jesus came to do God’s will in dying on the cross for the sins of the world.

Basically verses eight and nine repeat the things written in verses five through seven. Jesus gave complete obedience to the Father during His earthly ministry. In doing so, He took away the first covenant to establish the second.

9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second.

“The only complete fulfillment of the will of God appeared in Christ’s perfect obedience. Because we who have trusted Christ are identified with him, we also have fulfilled the will of God. God received us on the basis of Jesus’ complete fulfillment of God’s will. Once for all showed the finality of the transaction.”

11 By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised.

The priests under the Old Covenant continually offered sacrifices with no power to take away sins.
12 Therefore there was born even of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants as the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

The sacrifice of Jesus lasted because His atoning blood offered a permanent pardon for the sins of all time. Once Jesus offered Himself as a sacrifice for sins, resurrected from the dead and revealed Himself to eyewitnesses, He ascended in to the heavens and sat down at the right hand of God.
13 All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.
Notice the Old Testament priests were standing while our High Priest is seated. What difference does this make? The priests stood to perform their duty which was never permanent. Jesus sat down because His work was finished. The atoning work of Jesus on the cross permanently dealt with sin forever. Do you remember our Lord’s final words from the cross.
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
When Jesus said His work was finished, He really did mean it.
13 waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.
14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.
Holman New Testament Commentary: Hebrews & James 3. Permanent Because It Secured Forgiveness (vv. 11–18)
The present era is a waiting period as Christ anticipates a final victory over his enemies. We have been living in this era since the time of Jesus’ exaltation to heaven. Christ has already won the victory, but we do not yet see the complete defeat of Christ’s spiritual enemies. Rather than complaining about the delay, we should see this time as a day of grace to allow outsiders to experience God’s mercy and forgiveness. We have no doubt or question about the ultimate outcome.

14 For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
Think about the effect of Jesus’ atoning work on the cross. One “offering has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” Because of the atoning work of Jesus on the cross we have been set apart and declared holy. Keep in mind, this is not due to anything we do, but because of everything Jesus did for us when He offered Himself as a sacrifice for our sins.

15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying, 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws upon their heart, And on their mind I will write them,” He then says, 17 “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

How do we learn about the things God has done for us through our Lord Jesus Christ? Do you remember Jesus telling His disciples He must go so the Holy Spirit would come?
15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,
10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. 12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws upon their heart, And on their mind I will write them,” He then says,
What is the Holy Spirit trying to teach us about Jesus in this passage? Our experience is more than an outward one. When Jesus comes into our hearts, God writes His laws upon our hearts and on our minds. We are also taught God no longer remembers our sins and transgressions. Why? Because they are covered in the blood of Jesus. We are purified by the blood of Jesus.

17 “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.
There is no longer any need for additional offerings for our sins because the blood Jesus forgives sin and purifies the sinner.
CONCLUSION
One sacrifice for sins should humble each of us and lead us to be thankful Jesus offered a pleasing sacrifice, a permanent sacrifice and a purifying sacrifice.
