Mark 1:21–28 ESV
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Jesus Has Authority To Teach

Mark 1:21–22 ESV
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
Mark 1:
Jesus teaching was Astonishing
People were genuinely shocked at the teaching of Jesus. His words struck them like a blow.
Jesus spoke with Authority
The scribes and pharisees could only quote from other sources of authority. They never spoke from their own authority. They were forced to draw from what different teachers had said about this verse or that verse. I imagine this made their sermons boring and dispassionate for the hearers.
Jesus, on the other hand, embodied his message. He actually taught the Word of God not just about the word of God. We see in his other sermons that it was common for him to say phrases like “You have heard it said.. But I say to you.” He corrected the teachers of the day because he was the very embodiment of truth and authority. He knew the Word of God because it was His Word.
Jesus assuredly had a passion when he spoke, but it wasn’t his passion or character that startled the people who listened to Him. It was his logos, his words.

Jesus Has Authority Over Demons

Mark 1:23–26 ESV
23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
Demons opposed the Authority of Jesus.
The very act of Jesus teaching in the synagogue provoked the man with the unclean spirit. We don’t know for sure if this man was physically possessed or just powerfully under the sway and influence of this unclean spirit. Either way, the demon had such control of the man that he could control his actions and even speak through him.
The demon has come out to oppose Jesus in a crucial moment of Jesus ministry. Christ has just struck a blow to the kingdom of darkness with the beginning of his teaching ministry and I imagine the demon is trying to combat that blow.
Demons oppose the Authority of Jesus by challenging his dominion.
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?”
This is stated as a question, but it is more a statement that Jesus had no business there. The demon seemed to think that the earth was his dominion, not Christ’s.
Demons oppose the Authority of Jesus by mocking his power.
“Have you come to destroy us?”
The demon was trying to put Jesus on the defensive. As if Jesus needed to justify His actions to the demon.
Demons oppose the Authority of Jesus by claiming authority they don’t possess.
It was a widespread belief of the time that knowing something or someone’s true name gave you power over them. In addressing Jesus as the “Holy one of God” the demon was attempting to control Jesus and claim authority over Him that the demon never possessed. Probably in hopes of stopping whatever destruction the demon knew Jesus would bring to him.
Jesus displayed his Authority over the demon.
He rebuked the demon. “Silence” here means to muzzle. By the very power and authority of His words, Jesus muzzles and drags the demon out of the man. The demon can do nothing but writhe and scream as he is forced to obey the words of Jesus.

Jesus Has Authority Over You

Jesus still has all Authority today. He teaches our hearts through His Word with the same authority that he spoke with in the synagogue. With the same authority that overcame the demon, he has the authority to guide and mold our lives. We can be like the demon and try to oppose the authority Jesus has over our lives, but I fear that if we do our fate might be the same as that of the demon.

We Proclaim the Gospel with the Authority of Jesus

Matthew 28:18-
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Jesus has ALL authority in heaven and Earth. And in light of this He sends us out to make disciples of all nations. And this same Jesus, who has all authority promises to be with us always. When we are on mission for Jesus we speak and work with the very authority of Jesus. He empowers us by His authority to declare the good news of the gospel to all nations.
