Heaven and Earth pass away
Heaven and Earth pass away
Matt 5:17-19
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Deut 30:15-16
“For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off.
If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.
I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,
Rev 21:1
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Not an iota, not a dot (any part of the law) will pass away until two criteria are met:
Not an iota, not a dot (any part of the law) will pass away until two criteria are met:
Heaven and Earth pass away (Not Done Yet)
All of the Law and Prophets are fulfilled (Not Done Yet
But Jesus said it was finished on the cross.
John 19:30
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
What was finished?
Was all of the Law & Prophets finished?
Has Heaven and Earth passed away?
Or was it the plan of salvation (the cross) was finished?
Is the plan of salvation (the cross) concluding all of the Law and Prophets?
Did the cross cause Heaven and Earth to pass away?
Let’s look at the scriptures
But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
2 Pater 3:13
Peter states Heaven and Earth have not passed away
Peter states Heaven and Earth have not passed away
Heaven and Earth passing away EQUALS All prophecy being fulfilled
Heaven and Earth passing away EQUALS All prophecy being fulfilled
The last prophecy is a new heaven and new earth
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Jesus then states It is done!
Revelation clearly says that the first heaven and first earth do not pass away until the end of times.
“But Jesus did ALL of the Law for me”
“But Jesus did ALL of the Law for me”
“… so obviously I do not have to.”
for what?
We don’t have to keep the Law of God… for salvation.
We don’t have to keep the Law of God… for salvation.
Salvation has always ben by grace through faith. The Law of God has never played a role in earning or maintaining salvation.
It is true, we don’t have to keep God’s law… but only in the context of salvation.
Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
If a believer teaches less commandments, they are to be least in the Kingdom. If a believer teaches all commandments they are to be great.
Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
These are our rewards based on the great commission.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
We know that Jesus taught the law of Moses, otherwise he would’ve been a false prophet .
We are to teach all nations everything in the Bible.
Saying I don’t have to keep the law, because Jesus kept it for me is similar to saying
Jesus was baptized so I don’t have to be.
We are covered by grace in the context of salvation, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore commandments because of our grace.
“What faith in the Word would we really have if we do not even contain a real desire to live the same Word that we profess to believe in?”
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
R
Obedience isn’t to maintain our salvation but the evidence of our salvation.
We don’t have to keep God’s law for salvation, but he asks us to keep God’s law because we shouldn’t want to sin.
We also want to show God that we love him.
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
1
“You shall therefore love the Lord your God and keep his charge, his statutes, his rules, and his commandments always.
God defines how he wants to be loved. It is not up to us or anyone else to define how we should love God.
For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Matt
But why do we have to wait for Heaven and Earth?
What is the relationship between Heaven and Earth and the Law of God?
What is the relationship between Heaven and Earth and the Law of God?
Heaven and Earth are the witnesses of the Law of God being set before us.
Heaven and Earth are the witnesses of the Law of God being set before us.
“For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off.
Deut 30:11
If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.
I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,
Why does that matter?
Why does that matter?
It matters because two to three witnesses establishes a matter.
It matters because two to three witnesses establishes a matter.
D
This is the third time I am coming to you. Every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.
“A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established.
But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.
Not only is heaven and earth the last prophetic event before all the law and prophets are fulfilled. But heaven and earth are the witnesses to the establishing of the Law of God.
Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
Did Paul follow the law? Did he change it? What did Paul say regarding the law?
But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets,
Paul is often misunderstood and is still being accused today of teaching against the Law of God. Which is why Peter wrote about it
And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability.
Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
