Jesus has been teaching about pride and humility here in chapter 20. The first will be last and the last shall be first (v.16 paraphrased). He is talking about the heart of the servant. Today in our passage He is going to remind them of what is coming, give them a little more information and then address ambitious pride. So grab your story book to (pgs. 111-12) and open your bibles to Mt20:17-28 broken down in two sections (vv.17-19) (vv.19-28)

(Slide) So What do you see in this passage?
Interesting that each time Jesus mentions this He adds a little more details, let me show you each one.
21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.

22 And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men; 23 and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.” And they were deeply grieved.
So we have, will be handed over to the hands of man (mt17) and suffer many things from elders, chief priests and scribes (Mt16) then in both speaks of the death and resurrection, but our passage today adds a new element.
(Slide) What is the new element mentioned in our passage not mentioned in the other two? - Handed to Gentiles, scourged and crucified.
(Slide) Jesus is trying again to teach just the 12 what is about to happen to Him. Let’s look at the progression of the passage.

In adding about the crucifixion Jesus is adding the shame, the humiliation and the horror of what is about to happen.
23 his corpse shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is accursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance.
Jesus was considered cursed of God, the reality of the situation is Jesus became the curse in our place. He was delivered up for our transgressions (sin).
25 He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.

He became sin for us.
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
He had to be handed over to the Romans (Gentiles) because the Jews under Roman law could not kill Him - they had to carry out their dirty work. And they would mock, and flog Him as a king, not a victim. Remember Christ never opened his mouth (fulfilling scripture of Isa53).

The crucifixion normally was kept for the worse of the worse and it was slow and painful as well as humiliating. To Jesus it is being carried out in perfect fulfillment and will play and important example to the disciples of some what they were going to face.

The disciples attitude in this next section shows that they failed to comprehend the gravity of Jesus’ prediction.

Our efforts at earthly greatness does not equate to greatness in the kingdom of God.
There is a link in the two sections. Suffering (vv.17-18; 22-23) Jesus suffering and helping the disciples understand that they don’t understand what they are asking of Him for they too were going to suffer.

(Slide) Who came to Jesus in (v.20)? - Salome and her sons, James and John; Salome was one of the women at the cross and at the resurrection.
(Slide) What was the request in (v.21)? - Now in all reality who would not want this for their son, to have them have a position of prominence, especially in Jesus kingdom. Jesus had already told them they would rule with them, but still two wanted more, they wanted to be #2 and #3
(Slide) What was the response in (v.22)? - This is about the cup of suffering Jesus is about to go through. Jesus had never hid the fact that the cost of discipleship is high and one must consider the cost.
(Slide) Now we get to (v.23) notice he makes two points.
(Slide) You are going to drink from my cup (cup of suffering)
(Slide)but as to where you sit, it’s up to my Father - they had already been promised they would sit on thrones
28 And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
The others become indignant of John and James (v.24) - what, jealous? Why because they did not think of it first and make the request first? We don’t know for sure, but we do know how Jesus responds to all of them. Look at (v.25) -What did Jesus tell them?

The Gentiles with their great men lord over headship, authority over those who serve under them. This leads to the point Jesus wants to make about the servant of God.
26 It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant,
Not the way of the Gentiles, Don’t lord it over people, serve people, you want to be great, be a servant. Jesus came as a servant, we should serve one another. Jesus came to give His life or us, we should give our lives in service to Him and to others.
True greatness comes in humble servant not in ambitious pride. Jesus had previously taught on humility.
2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, 3 and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Here he compares the humility to that of a slave. We are to be slaves of Christ, for Christ, serving one another in love.
Jesus life, death expresses the love and devotion that He has for man and is a example to the disciples of how their life is to be.
21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
We can also see from Paul’s great passage covering Christ’s servitude.
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Jesus gave His life as a ransom for many in our passage today, Paul in writing to Timothy says “all”
6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.
Just a couple more points.
11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.
Because of Christ suffering he Justifies man, and bears their sins.
7 No man can by any means redeem his brother Or give to God a ransom for him— 8 For the redemption of his soul is costly, And he should cease trying forever—
Because of Christ suffering he redeemed us, it was at a great cost.
What is your life worth, how about your kids, friends, family? Are you willing to pick up your cross and follow Christ? Are you willing to suffer for Him? Today, be humble and not pridefully ambitious and be a true servant of God.!
