Here is just a sample of recent files that have crossed our desks:
A staff accountant with multiple lines of credit, several maxed-out credit cards, a big mortgage, a significant home-equity line of credit (HELOC) and two leased luxury cars;
a TTC driver with two mortgages and $100,000 in unsecured lines of credit;
a teacher with eight payday loans
a senior financial analyst at a chartered bank with seven credit cards, all carrying high balances. [i wonder what he/she tells the client on how to manage their finances]
According to StatsCan:
Canadians now owe over $21,000 on average in non-mortgage debt
Over half of Canadians are $200 or less away from not being able to pay bills
Canadians owe $1.67 for every $1 of household disposable income
Canadians owing $2 trillion by the end of 2016
We are supposed to be living in the one of the most wealthy, most developed countries of the world but here we are drowning in debt!
Debt does not bother us anymore. We are not fazed at all by it. We try not to think about it. But it does come back to bite us. And in the end we are in bondage.
North Americans don’t need to be in spiritual bondage, they are in enough financial bondage.
That’s not God’s plan for your life! He wants you to be free. Jesus came to give us life and that abundantly but we are setting ourselves up for misery by the poor choices we make, especially with money.
Therefore the Series: Making Sense out of Dollars.
In this series, I’ll look at:
The true value of money
What Proverbs has to say about money
What Jesus said about money
How important is giving?
What about tithes?
How should I approach money?
How do I come up with a financial plan for my life?
How can I get out of debt?
Today we will set the stage for the series:
Text: 1 Chron. 29: 10-16
Text: 1 Chron. 29: 10-16
Background: David, a man after God’s own heart, possibly the greatest of all of Israel’s kings, deeply desired to build a temple of worship God. God’s sanctuary was a tent and he wasn’t happy about that. But he was disappointed because God told him he was a man of war, there was too much blood on his hands. However, his son Solomon would be the one to build the temple. David however, did not give up. In fact, I was pretty surprised to learn that the architectural design for the temple was not done by Solomon. It all came from David as he was inspired by God. But David did not stop there. He also made provisions for it, from the treasury of the state, his own finances and the people also gave generously.
These verses are David’s prayer: look for the words - you, yours
10 Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever.
11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.
12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.
13 And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.
14 “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.
15 For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding.
16 O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own.
Look at those phrases again:
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness etc [10]
All that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. [11]
Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, [11]
Both riches and honor come from you [12]
For all things come from you comes from you [14]
Yours O Lord v11
These verses are David’s prayer in
All this abundance … comes from your hand [16]
your hand and is all your own
Is all your own [16]
At least seven statements that emphasize who owns it all.
All
It’s all Yours God!
It’s all Yours God!
Proposition:
Proposition:
Everything I have belongs to God.
Three reasons I say this.
You cannot serve God and Money
1. God is Creator of all things
1. God is Creator of all things
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
1 The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,
God created the entire universe out of nothing by His mere Word.
God created the entire universe out of nothing by His mere Word.
How big is the universe? We can’t wrap our heads around it.
How many galaxies? How many stars?
100 B galaxies with 100 B stars each.
He calls into existence the things that do not exist. []
Think about only the earth - Rocky Mountains, hills, valleys, Lakes, oceans, vast deserts.
He created us too.
We worship a God is Great. He is the Creator of everything.
as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.
He is not an idol that requires us to build. He doesn’t need food or sacrifices from us to sustain Him.
So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.
For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.
The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,
nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
: 22-
God doesn’t need anything from us.
One of the issues about speaking on money in the church is that people get their backs up. Now I must acknowledge that many pastors and churches have use schemes to get money from people and mismanaged finances.
So many don’t like to hear sermons on money, nor do they want to give. And we should understand God doesn’t need my money!
“Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God.
Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me.
I will not accept a bull from your house or goats from your folds.
For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine.
“If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine.
Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High,
and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
Everything is God’s by virtue of the fact that He made it all. If He made it all and us, then we belong to Him. All we have is His!
But we do not have a God who just created everything and then went off on journey or fell asleep. The Scriptures declare a God who is active in our world. He is involved in His creation. Unlike Deism.
2. God is Sustainer all things
2. God is Sustainer all things
And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
for “ ‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “ ‘For we are indeed his offspring.’
When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants, it is I who keep steady its pillars. Selah
God is holding everything together on this planet.
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.
That’s why when there are predictions about an asteroid hitting the earth and decimating life, we don’t worry about those things or about climate change bringing us to extinction.
A house-sized asteroid will shave past our planet on 12 October, far inside the Moon’s orbit but without posing any threat, astronomers have said.
One of the big concerns today is Climate Change, almost a religion now. People are willing to die for it. Save the trees, save the whales, kill the babies.
Understand that many of the environmentalists are operating from a pure humanistic standpoint. Many do not factor in God.
We believe God created and is sustaining His creation and one day He will recreate a New Earth. This planet will not continue forever.
I do believe we should be responsible and take care of the planet - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. But ultimately, God is holding this all together.
Remember that, we are looking forward to new earth. Regardless, of what we do,
Jesus set an example for us - feeding the 5000.
Finally,
3. God is Provider of all things
3. God is Provider of all things
One of the Names of God is Jehovah Jireh - The Lord will provide.
7 For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?
19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.
You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
Ps. 1
As followers of Jesus, believers in the God of the Bible, we take confidence, strength and hope in the God who provides. The God who takes of us.
The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.
“Where God guides, He provides.”
Presently, you may be faced with some need, some difficulty, a huge debt and you don’t know how to handle it all. The stress may be taking a toll on you.
If you will begin to put your faith in God, believe, Him, trust His Word and obey His principles, I can guarantee you that you can also prove Him as Your Provider.
7 For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?
Everything that we have is from God!
Story
29 At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon,
30 and the king answered and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?”
31 While the words were still in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you,
32 and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.”
33 Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles’ feathers, and his nails were like birds’ claws.
34 At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation;
35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?”
36 At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and splendor returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me.
37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

Implications
We have nothing that God did not give us.
We walk on His earth. We breathe His air. We live by His strength. He keeps us alive. He protects us from evil.
He gives us abilities, gifts, talents, resources.
It’s not because of us.
it’s all His.
Is that how you live your life? Knowing that everything you have is from God?
This week ahead, as you spend time with God, single out one thing that He has provided for you and thank Him for that specifically.
You may have plenty or you may have little but all is from God.
Whether you drive a Benz or a Chevy, its all God’s.
Whether you rent a basement of own a house, its all God’s.
Whether you wear a Rolex or Timex, it’s all God’s.
Whether you bought it from Sach’s or Walmart, it’s all God’s.
Whether your coffee is Starbucks or Tim’s, it’s all God’s.
We are all stewards of the blessings of God but we cannot understand and live stewardship unless we understand ownership.
Have you given your life back to God? have you made a commitment of your life to Christ? Making Him Lord and Savior?
When Jesus taught us to pray - “Yours is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory.”
