Introduction
Speak a moment on the material from last week, the crucifixion of Jesus and his burial.
Now today we begin with verse 1
So the first day of the week we find Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary brought spices to finish anointing the body of Jesus.
Now this one event is recorded in all 4 gospels, , and .
John records the least of the moment of the ladies finding the empty tomb, John speaks more of the men coming to see about what the ladies had said....
Wasnt
Now we know that Joseph and Nicodemus were fairly rushed that evening of the crucifixion before the passover began to finish the events that were necessary.
Now verses 2-3
Mark 16
Now verse 2 gives us more detail.
Early morning, just after sunrise they went to the tomb.... when?
The Scripture tells us it was the first day of the week, so it is Sunday morning....
That is the first day of the week, and we call it Sunday.
Now the ladies had all they needed?
They had clothe and spices, everything they would need to finish preparing the body of Jesus correctly for burial.
You see on thing we must take into consideration here is the truth that these women loved Jesus, they were his students just as the men were, They were not apostles, but they were followers, they were ones who listened, heard and put into practiced his teaching in their lives.
Some have even witnessed his mercy, healing and redemption first hand.... they loved Him more than life itself.
There would be nothing to stop them from doing what was on their heart to do...
But… there was one question among them… what was it?
Who will role away the stone… That was the only point they didn’t know the answer to right then.
But they were confident they could finish what was on their hearts.
Just they didnt have an answer about the stone.
But wait.... look at verse 4
when they arrived on the scene, what did they find, the burial place was already open, the stone had already been rolled out of the way.
Now this is interesting because we know it was there.
Luke
and Mark himself says in : 46-47
so 3 of the four gospel tell us specifically that they knew ( the ladies ) where the body of Jesus was and that a stone had been rolled into place to seal the tomb And the ladies knew exactly where all this was...
Now lets move forward
Now Mark says they went into the tomb , not that they mere gazed inside.
These were not weak women, yes they looked inside, these ladies came to serve Jesus.
and as they entered they find an angel of the Lord, a man dressed in white linen
Quesiton: What can you tell me about the place the man was sitting on the right side.
He was actually sitting on the place where Jesus had lay for three days, he was on the mortuary stone bed.
And the Bible says at the end over verse 5, they were alarmed....
my words here..... ya think......
Verse 6 the angel spoke to them Do not be alarmed, The angel was asking them to calm down and be ready for the news.
You came seeking Jesus of Narazeth, He is not here,
He has risen.... after telling them that Jesus was not there, that was the best reason in the world.
Jesus had risen.
and then there was a wonderful invitation… come and see
Verse 7. Then there is a command.... go and tell His disciples and Peter.
Why this.....
Peter needed to hear Jesus was interested in Him, that despite the denials, He was still one of them.
Now why the command of going ahead of them into Galilee?
Well let me take you back to Chapter 14.
Mark 14
Now some have wondered if there faith was slow.
Because they didn’t go to Galilee right away, it wasn’t until after the Jerusalem visits that they would do so… and he was there twice, once for all and then once for Thomas.
Verse 8
Fear, excitement and so much joy… they fled the tomb,
Now verses 9-13
Now verses 9-20
External evidence suggests these verses were not originally part of Mark’s gospel.
Majority of the Greek texts have these verses, the earliest and most reliable do not have them.
The 4th century church fathers Eusebius and Jerome noted that most all the Greek manuscripts available to them did not have these verses.
Now we begin.....
Verse 9-10
It seems to restate what we already know with extra detail
It seems to restate what we already know with extra detail, So mark tells us that Jesus appears first to Mary Magdalene.
It seems to restate what we already know with extra detail, So mark tells us that Jesus appears first to Mary Magdalene.
It seems to restate what we already know with extra detail, So mark tells us that Jesus appears first to Mary Magdalene.
She goes back ( verse 10) and tells the disciples who were mourning that she had seen Jesus alive and risen from the dead.
Is it any surprise to you that they were gathered mourning in the Upper Room?
Reminds us that no one understood the resurrection of Jesus until it had taken place.
Verse 11
Verse 11
why do you think they discredited her so easily?
But, they would not believe her...
Now verses 12-13
The road to Emmas
But the disciples still did not believe.
Mark 16:
So Jesus appears to the eleven, and of course we know that Judas is not amount the crew.
He rebukes them because they did not believe the witnesses that he sent ahead of this visit.
He had prepared people and they could not believe them, in truth that were all like ‘Thomas.”
He rebukes them because they did not believe the witnesses that he sent ahead of this visit.
He had prepared people and they could not believe them, in truth that were all like ‘Thomas.”
and with verse 15 we see the Great Commission of Jesus.
This is the verse I was reading then the Lord called me some 34 years ago to the ministry to preach.
What do you think of verse 16?
Is there not an urgency to it all, those who do not believe will be condemned.
Now one thing important from verse 16, baptism does not save you… baptism comes after salvation, but some have confused the wording to mean you must included baptism as a portion of the salvation experience.
it does not.
What do you think of verse 16?
Is there not an urgency to it all, those who do not believe will be condemned.
Now the most 2 special verses
Mark 16:17
5 promises are made to those disciples who are following the Lord.
Now many say that believers should be able to practice these things today, many scholars think that tis was only for the apostolic age....
what do you think about this
Much of this was similar to the sending out of the 12 in Matthew 10
what do you think about this
And we know that the apostles were given such gifts to authentic the gospel message.
I am by no means saying that gifts are over.... but I am not saying we were called to pick up serpents and drink deadly poision
