Stone Pillars
Stone Pillars
28 Do not move the ancient boundary Which your fathers have set.
Boundaries, today in our society we don’t display a lot of boundaries, people do as they please and do not think about the consequences until after that fact and then they are surprised.
(Insert Illustration of dad and his teaching boundaries)
In Isreal they would set stone pillars up marking a land, to denote the boundaries of a persons land and there were grave consequences if you moved a boundary, a marker, a pillar.
14 “You shall not move your neighbor’s boundary mark, which the ancestors have set, in your inheritance which you will inherit in the land that the Lord your God gives you to possess.
I used to think my father was old fashioned and now today I don’t think so. I think he was principled and taught us the things we needed to know. But what about people who think the Bible is outdated, it is old fashioned and others who want to update it to mean something that God never meant in the first place?
Our ever changing world is just that, ever changing, but God’s Word is true and unchanging. As a christian today, do we look like the old fashion Christians? Today I want to look at old fashioned Christianity, here are some of the markers of an old fashioned Christian and may these markers, boundaries be found in us.
I.He Believes the Bible

(Slide) He knows it is the Word of God and is God’s Word
160 The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.
160 The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.
150 Those who follow after wickedness draw near; They are far from Your law.
160 The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.
(Slide) Would not even consider it was wrong, had errors or contradicted itself.
(Slide) He accepted the Word as the Truth
(Slide) He obeyed it and followed it’s commands

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
As for the commands
30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
You knew it because he lived it, loved the Lord and loved others in word and deed.
The things that were forbade he did not do for he knew of the grievousness of sin
II. He takes his Christianity Seriously
II. He takes his Christianity Seriously
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
He knew there was something different about a Christian and was not afraid to be different.
(Insert a slide about being different)
Different is not just an outside thing, it is an inside thing, a heart thing.
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
1Jn
An old fashioned Christian knows the world and it’s things are passing away but the eternal things of God will never pass away.
19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.
He is not worried about the what the world thinks of him. He wants to impact the world for the Lord.
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
He takes his Christianity seriously and knows when he renews his mind through God’s Word he is able to prove what is the will of God and do those things.
15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
He loves the Lord and will keep His commands
He is not a Sunday only Christian, he lived out his faith daily.
57 The Lord is my portion; I have promised to keep Your words.
Yes, keeping your word, each day, every day, all the way knowing the Lord is your portion! This is more than a physical thing, but this is a spiritual thing too, keeping your word to God that you offered up in prayer or in thought to Him.
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word.
Psm119:
He takes his Christianity seriously and keeps way from things that can or will stumble him or others.
4 Then he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; Keep my commandments and live;
He takes in the word of God because he was taught the word of God and in turn teaches the word of God to others. He holds fast to the word even when it is unpopular.
As an old fashioned Christian he did not compartmentalize or fragment his life. He lived for Christ all day in every way for Him who gave it all for him to have the life he has.
He knew the importance of meeting together.
25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
(EXPAND ON THAT: GET THE WORD IN, SO THE WORD STAYS IN AND THE WORD WILL COME OUT) - PUT INTO PRACTICE OR RISK LOSING IT.
Just as the old time Christian gathered we gather today to (Expand on this too)
He was willing to share Christ with others and did, may that still be a great example for us today, sharing our Jesus with others.

To Him it is more important to share the truth and stand in the truth vs. being popular
He did not try to make two wrongs into a right.
Rom12:
17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”

(Slide) Does not pay back evil for evil (v.17) - - - - - - - - THIS IS ONE SLIDE, KEEP IT THAT WAY
Lives at peace with all men (v.18)
Is not vengeful and leaves judgment for God (v.19)
He loves his enemy (v.20)
17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.
He knew what ever he did, it was to give thanks to God the Father through doing it in Jesus name.
23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,
He did it not because he had too, but because he works for the Lord and worked from his heart daily.
For he also knew.
9 How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? 10 “A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest”— 11 Your poverty will come in like a vagabond And your need like an armed man.

Pro
He knew that if he did not work that proverty would come upon him. There was no time to be lazy
He took the marriage vows “of in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad” seriously - he worked through things since he knew God created marriage to a lifetime thing.
He did not need a contract his word was his bond; he kept his word.
5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.
E
He keep his word and paid what was owed.
He loved his freedom enough to fight for it. - - - -THIS IS NOT A SLIDE, LEAVE IT THAT WAY
He loved his freedom enough to fight for it.
Freedom for his family
Freedom for his Country.
Freedom for his faith
He had a hatred for sin.
13 “I have not listened to the voice of my teachers, Nor inclined my ear to my instructors!
13 Who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, Who points with his fingers;
13 “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverted mouth, I hate.
Yes hates evil, keeps pride and arrogance in check as well as his tongue.
9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.
His love is his nature, not something forced, he hates what is evil, and clings to what is good.
10 Hate evil, you who love the Lord, Who preserves the souls of His godly ones; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
He knows the Lord preserves the godly ones, and delivers them. (Expand)
Oh and he has love for the things of the Lord.’
2 How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, Who seek Him with all their heart. 3 They also do no unrighteousness; They walk in His ways.
1 How blessed are those whose way is blameless, Who walk in the law of the Lord. 2 How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, Who seek Him with all their heart.
Psm119:
Observes His testimonies -this is not on a slide, just use to reference the scripture above (expound if time permits)
He seeks with his whole heart
He walks in the the ways of the Lord
He is blessed because of it
IV. He raised his children properly
IV. He raised his children properly
He didn’t know a man named Spock or a woman named Clinton (it takes a parent to raise a child, not a village)
He seeks the Lord with all his heart.
(Slide) HE IS BLESSED BECAUSE OF TRADITIONAL VALUES!
He was not enthralled with psychology but was with theology (it is about what God says not what man says)
He wa
He did not concern himself with phases (no matter the phase, the parenting stayed consistent and persistent)
IV. He raised his children properly.
IV. He raised his children properly.
Discipline was not something threatened, it was used to correct the child. (choices have ramifications)
He did not know a man named Spock or a woman named Clinton. He did not leave raising his children to a village or anyone else. He took responsibility
Discipline helped his child (it helps the child know there are consequences to choices and helps child learn right from wrong)
He was not impressed with psychology he was with theology.
He did not worry about phases but in raising with consistency
He was more concerned about the child than what others thought. (The child not the court was more important)
24 He who withholds his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him diligently.
(Slide) He demanded his children did right, by his words, by his example
(Slide) He believed when a parent said it the child obeyed
(Slide) He had not heard of anyone saying you cannot force a child to do right.
1 My son, if you will receive my words And treasure my commandments within you, 2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding;
He wanted them to treasure his words, to be attentive and with his heart gain understanding
1 My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments;
With his heart he wanted him to keep the teachings of the father and the Father.
1 Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention that you may gain understanding, 2 For I give you sound teaching; Do not abandon my instruction.
He warned the child not to abandon the teachings of both father and mother.
1 My son, give attention to my wisdom, Incline your ear to my understanding;
He wants the child to give attention, to listen up, to gain understanding from the Father (and mother too)
He
He taught the child to work and to respect authority
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),
Obey for it is right to do, honor for it comes with a promise
20 Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.
Doing the right thing is the right thing to do and is pleasing to the Lord.
V. He believed earnestly
V. He believed earnestly
He believes that sin separates men from God
2 But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.
He believes in the depravity and severity of sin

24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
He knew the truth
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Christ died so to reconcile man to God through His own blood that is applied at baptism
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
