Implications of the New Covenant

Hebrews 10:19–25 KJV 1900

19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21 And having an high priest over the house of God; 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

We have come to the end of the Apostles expostion on the high priestly role and service of Jesus Christ and in our text this morning He begins to give us the application.

I’m reminded of a passage back when we began looking at the high priestly role of Christ.

Heb 10:

Hebrews 4:14–16 KJV 1900

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

We can now come boldly into the holiest of holies. The old coventant could not allow the worshipers to even get close to the holy of holies

Hebrews 9:7–8 KJV 1900

7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: 8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:

But now we have access to enter BOLDLY into the holiest of all, how, how can a sinner such as I, one as inadiquate, as unrighteous as I enter into that holy presence of God? Not by any works that I have done that’s for certian. The high preist could only enter in once a year and only with blood for his our sins as well as for the people. He did not go boldly he went fearfully. If he did anything wrong in the way he entered in he would die instantly.

So how can we enter into the most holy place? only by the blood of Jesus Christ. The blood of Jesus has purged me and made me righteous so that not only can I enter into the holy of holies I can enter in boldly. And not only can I enter in boldly but boldly is the only way that I should enter in.

By the blood of Christ and through the veil which is His body

Hebrews 10:10 KJV 1900

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

This is the new and living way, this is the only way, This was always the way, this is the last way, because Jesus is the way the truth and the life and no one can come to the father but by Him, because there is no other name in heaven and in earth by which we must be saved. This is it. If you reject Christ there is no other offering for sin. It does matter who you believe in all roads do not lead to God the road is narrow and the way straight and there are few who find it.

Let Us Draw Near

And now knowing this and knowing that we have such a high priest over the house of God which house we are. We come to the commands given in our passage.

Let Us Draw Near

Let us draw near to God. This is what we were created for. This is what Adam and Eve had in the garden, this is what was lost because of sin, this is what is reclaimed for us by Jesus Christ. We can once again draw near to God. This is fellowship with God, communion with Him. This is the deepest desire of every human being whether we realise it or not. This is what we are all searching for. This is that hunger and thrist which Jesus talked about. The world seeks for beauty, for belonging, for purpose, for love, and all the while we are blind to the fact the Jesus is the fullfilment. Through Christ we can now draw near to God.

What does this mean? Jesus said

John 4:24 KJV 1900

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Hebrews 11:6 KJV 1900

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Heb 11:

So then those who worship God, that is draw near unto God must do so in faith and in truth. What is the truth that they must have faith in?

So when we draw near to God to fellowship and commune with Him we must do so having assurance of faith in the truth that we have had our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water (which is pictured in baptisim but actually acomplished through the sanctifing of the Spirit of God)

This is a powerful revelation! That is when I draw near to God he doen’t want me to come crawling and beating myself with a whip crying I’m not worthy. How often do we come before God feeling unworthy? When we do we are not approching Him in the full assurance of faith in the truth that we have been washed in the blood of Christ and our sins have been taken away and that we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. This is why twice the Apostle has told us that when we enter into the presence of God we must come boldly. Now there is a great difference between boldly and pridefully. We must humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord because God resist the proud but give grace to the humble but humility is not shame. If I approch God with gult and shame then I approch Him with a lack of faith.

Now what is the next command?

Let Us Hold Fast

Our profession of Faith.

23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

The Profession of our faith

We cannot hold fast to something we do not have, so we see what it is we have. We have faith. Faith in Jesus Christ, faith that He is God, that by His sacrifice on the cross I am washed, sprinkeled with the His blood having my conscience purged and my sins taken away. If we don’t have this faith then lets stop here and place your faith in Jesus Christ, trust Him for the salvation of your soul, put all your hope and confidence in Him, repenting of your sins and believing in Jesus Christ trusting in Him that He will save you and make Him Lord of your life. If this is our faith then we must have made a profession or a confession of it for

Romans 10:10 KJV 1900

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

It’s this confession that we are told here to hold fast to. We should remember when we first made this confession and we should continue to profess our faith in Jesus Christ. We should hold fast to the truth of the gospel, he says without wavering. There are a great many things which we may change our mind about or debate but one thing that we should never change in our faith in Jesus Christ, as Paul said even if an angel comes and preaches another gospel do not recieve it, there is only one way to salvation and it is through Jesus Christ. Do not waver on this truth ever. Do not let it go, Do not drift away from it, Do not walk away from it.

And what it the reason given...

For He is Faithful that Promised

The reason given that we should hold fast our profession of faith is because Jesus is faithful to you and has made promises to you and He will never leave you or forsake you. Jesus cannot deny himself but is faithful to us.

So hold fast your profession of faith. We need this admonition today. How easy it is to drift away from these truths. We neglect drawing near to God because we let the truth slip from our minds that because of the blood of Christ we have bold access to the throne of God. Hold fast to this faith. lets not neglect so great a salvation.

24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

Philippians 2:3–4 KJV 1900

3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

Let us consider, literally let us look out for one another. Not only are we to draw near unto God and hold fast our profession of faith but we are also to look out for each other and help one another so that we don’t drift away. How do we look out for each other?

Provoke unto Love and to Good Works

Now this one is tricky. the word Provoke means to incite or irritate.

Now we could say well it means to encourage people and it does mean that too but I think that the translator were pretty close when they chose the word provoke. But we don’t like to be provoked. Now I also don’t believe this means that we become obnoxious, judgemental, or rude.

Proverbs 27:17 KJV 1900

17 Iron sharpeneth iron; So a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

When you sharpen a blade with another blade it only works because there is a abrasion. Each time the blade passes across the other blade it takes a little metal off. But if you turn the blade on an aggressive angle then not only will you fail to sharpen either blade but both blade will become dull and damaged. So there should be some provoking but not aggressive provoking. and it should be unto love and good works.

So how does this healthy abrasion take place?

Not Forsaking the Assembling

25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

It happens as we assemble. So when we chose not to come to church. Notice the word chose I not referring to those who are hindered by illness or are our of town for what ever reason I talking about when we are well and able but we chose another activity over assembling we are being inconsiderate of our brothers and sisters in Christ. You see He didn’t say don’t forsake the assembling of yourselves so that you can be edified and encouraged and challenged no he say let us consider one another.

And so much more as we see the day approaching.

It is so important, now more than ever, that we draw near unto God and hold fast to our profession of faith and the we consider one another.
