28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. ( KJV)
They had a certain way of having church
Jesus shook things up by teaching in a new way
The people became split by those were liked the new ways and those who didn’t
The desire wasn’t to change their routine, but there was power in the message that naturally changed things
There is a power in the message of Jesus today that is still the focus of what we do
Everything needs to go back to Jesus
The church exists to point people to Christ
It’s all about souls - evangelism, conversion, discipleship
There was a power in the message of Jesus that was able to shake up some things
27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.
28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee. ( KJV)
There was deliverance available through Jesus. This was such a new and marvelous thing that immediately he became famous.
People are just as bound today, but the answer remains the same - Jesus
They were so used to living their life the same way. No one who promised to help ever could - they had no authority, no power
We can get so caught up in how the message is delivered that we forget the power is not in the presentation
24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.
26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. ( KJV)
No one knew what to make of John the baptist because of how unorthodox he was
What did they go to see? Were they seeking to just be entertained?
We become governed by our expectations
Modern church culture can get in the way of an authentic relationship with Christ
Church lingo
We’re going back to basics - prayer and the word
Early pentecost didn’t have big programs
The only authority we have is the authority of the cross - preach repentance to a lost world
It was the power of Jesus to change lives that drew crowds, built the early church, gave people hope in hopeless situations
It is His power that heals the sick, raises the dead, restores broken lives
It is only by his power that any of us are going to accomplish what He wants us to accomplish
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; ( KJV)
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
(,, KJV)
