After the wall had been rebuilt (1), Nehemiah’s work was far from finished, so
he tackled his other assignments with the same
commitment and
persistence
persistence
which he had brought to the building operation.
In this next chapter we are provided with another of his lists,
but there is something more here than a
convenient archive from Israel’s past.
The opening sentences and the list itself provide us with a number of insights into Nehemiah’s leadership style, and
they are strikingly relevant in our world.
So in just under two months the incredible task of rebuilding the walls was complete.
The remaining problem faced now is: who is going to live in the rebuilt city and defend it from attack?
Nehemiah’s task is very similar to ours in our day.
The Jews who moved to Jerusalem were expected to defer their own interests to the will of God for the benefit of His people.
Who would be willing to make this sacrifice and pull up their roots to resettle in the capital city?
Christians too ought to be more attentive, concerned, devoted about the progress of the church and the glory of God
than about their own particular spheres of service.
The ministry of individual believers and churches is of the utmost importance to the Lord.
Nevertheless our labors are only part of the overall global work of God which spans the centuries from the creation until its consummation at the second advent of our Lord Jesus Christ.
