• Book Context – Rom 1-12/Doctrinal Knowledge, 12-16/Practical application
• Overarching theme – Rom 12:1
Present your body and your mind in worship to God, in
pursuit of His will.
• Immediate context – differences over matters of conscience – food and special days
• The one who eats is not to regard with contempt the one who does not eat
• This word “contempt” is to despise them or treat them as if they are worthless
• Lk 18:9 (Prayer of the Pharisee and tax colledtor) And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt
• Lk 23:11 And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate.
• Acts 4:11 aHe is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone.
• and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats
• to “judge” is to condemn
Colossians 2:16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day—
• Why?? Because God has accepted him.......
• for God has accepted him
1 Corinthians 8:8 But food will not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat.
• Who are you to judge a servant of another?
• the question “who are you? “ is a very sharp rhetorical qustion posed to expose arrogance in a persons life.
• the answer is---you are nobody!
• you are not a judge in this sense, in the sense of being someones Master.
1 Corinthians 4:3-4 But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord.
