You’re Going In The Wrong Direction

Matthew 19:22 ESV
When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
What did the young man hear?
Matthew 19:21 ESV
Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
“If you would be perfect” - Why did he feel that he was perfect?
“Go” - If he would have went, his mind would have played tricks on him.
Sell what you possess - Sell what your hold on to.
Give to the poor - Give what to the poor?
What will be my reward? - You will have treasure in heaven.
The Jesus tell him “and come, follow me.”
“When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.”
He went away sorrowful - You’re going the wrong direction…
Remember the you man dealt with the “I” syndrome
Remember:
“What good deed must “I” do to have eternal
(Talking about the commandments) “All these “I” have kept. What do “I” still lack?
If they would have asked him why are you coming back sad, He would say “I had to much to give up”
This “I” issue caused him to be sorrowful… He had to deal with knowing he wasn’t perfect but he couldn’t hide it anymore.
How do we overcome this?
John 15:1–5 ESV
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
Jesus is talking to his disciples
“He takes away” Or He lifts up - low-lying branches that are unproductive are propped up (or lifted up) on wooden stands in order to facilitate productivity.]
Abide: The word abide (menō) has the basic meanings of remain, live, or dwell, either literally, or as in this case figuratively.
low-lying branches that are unproductive are propped up (or lifted up) on wooden stands in order to facilitate productivity.
Abide: to continue a certain state, condition, or activity.
Here is how were over - “Abide in me, and “I” in you.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and ‘I’ in him, he it its that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
See the young man was going the wrong direction. “He went AWAY sorrowful,” when he should have went towards him with humility…
This is what happens when we go the right direction..
John 15:12–16 ESV
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
“love one another as I have loved you.”
“You are my friends if you do what I command you.”
“No longer do I call you servant.”
“But I have called you friends.”
For all that I have heard from my Father I have known to you.”
John 15:16 ESV
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
He choose us to abide in Him…
He choose us to move in the right direction.
Wilkin, R. N. (2010). The Gospel according to John. In R. N. Wilkin (Ed.), The Grace New Testament Commentary (p. 448). Denton, TX: Grace Evangelical Society.Abide: to continue a certain state, condition, or activity.
