Ps 2
Abel, the first martyr, was a shepherd (Gen.
4:2) and so were the patriarchs of Israel.
Moses spent forty years caring for his father-in-law’s sheep, and David, Israel’s greatest king, served his father as a shepherd.
Why?
So we would learn about the Shepherd and see how tenderly He cares for us.
Sheep are defenseless animals that are prone to get lost, and they need almost constant care.
You can’t drive sheep, as you do cattle; they must be led.
The eastern shepherds know their sheep by name and can call them and they will come (John 10:1–5).
The sheep were kept, not for food but for wool, milk, and reproduction.
In this psalm, David explains that if we follow the Lord and trust Him, He will meet our every need, no matter what the circumstances may be.
Jehovah Rohi: The Lord is My Shepherd.
The verb is a participle and means “is shepherding me.”
The only time that Sheep are seen in a favorable light in the scripture, is when they are under the care of a Good Shepard.
This Psalm is not a knock on sheep but rather, Gives us Bragging rights
Who’s Your____________

*I Shall Not want...
As My Shepherd God makes _______________

contentment
Contentment comes from _________ we have not ___________ we have.
A Complaining sheep is a Disgrace to its Shepard.
God meets my deepest needs.
Its a tendency for sheep to look at what other sheep have.
When God is our Shepard there isn't anyone else that we need or anything else that we need.
Sheep have a tendency to wander off in search of “Greener pastures”
But a stray sheep becomes easy pray for predators.
God makes me FREE to Rest!!
As My Shepherd God,___________Me________________
We are in the Field
Directs me to a safe place.
*Its something in sheep, that they cannot REST until they are free from conflict with other sheep, predators, pest and hunger.
safe place
The Shepard's guidance is key for the sheep to find rest.
Green pastures: Sheep's teeth are very dull, therefore they can only chew the finest of grass lest they don't chew it properly and choke.
Still Waters: Sheep cannot drink by choppy water...
# 1 Their noses are so short they can easily drown
#2 They are not good swimmers.
#3 Their heavy wool cotes could get to wet, thus pulling them into the water.
The first blessing David experienced was spiritual nourishment.
As a shepherd leads sheep to fresh grass for feeding, so the Lord leads His people.
One who follows the Lord does not lack any spiritual nourishment.
Under-shepherds
A second blessing that comes from the Lord’s leading is spiritual restoration.
As a shepherd leads his sheep to placid waters for rest and cleansing, so the Lord restores or refreshes the soul.
Here the spiritual lesson is clear: the Lord provides forgiveness and peace for those who follow Him.
Ps 23:
He Restores My Soul: Sheep may become “cast” stuck on there backs, unable to get up.
She sheep struggling to get up can quickly become dehydrated and easy prey for a predator.
The meaning is to restore vitality, vigor, strength; to renew, invigorate
As My Shepard God ___________ me and keeps me out of ____________
Revives & Ruts
He Leads me in paths of righteousness: The word lead means = To lead gently
Sheep are creatures of habit, they can “Over graze” their own pastures.
The Shepherd knows when its time to move down another path.
The word here means well -worn paths, ruts.
When a sheep begins to explore a “New” exciting path on there own it always leads to trouble.
Do not be carried away.
For His Name Sake: A good shepherd knows the right paths on which to bring the sheep home safely.
So too the Lord loses none of His sheep, but guides them in the right way.
He does so partly because of His reputation
