If the gospel is the way to peace with God and man, then we need to make it the centerpiece of our homes.
Ephesians 6:1–4 ESV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Paul wrote the Ephesians to celebrate the gospel of Jesus Christ and to teach Christians that it powerfully reforms every aspect of their lives.
According to Scripture, the primary purpose of family is to win new generations to faith in the gospel and raise godly adults.
Genesis 18:19 ESV
19 For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.”
Deuteronomy 6:7 ESV
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
Proverbs 22:6 ESV
6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:7 ESV
7 The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.
Psalm 78:4 ESV
4 We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.
“Here’s the bottom line: God has met you so you would be ready to introduce His glory and grace to your children.” -Paul Tripp, Parenting
“Teach the children the three R’s—Ruin, Redemption, and Regeneration.” -C.H. Spurgeon
The gospel is the chief expression of God’s peace.
The gospel empowers peace between family members.
We need to raise it up in our families, make it a family value.
