A. Before Jericho comes Gilgal
1. Before God gives us the strongholds, we have to give Him our hearts
2. We will never take the Jericho’s until we first conquer the flesh
B. Gilgal is the place of circumcision
1. It was the sign of the covenant between God and Abraham (Gen. 17)
2. Deuteronomy 30:6 “And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendents, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.”
C. Gilgal is the place of vulnerability
1. It hurts to submit to circumcision
2. The intense pain renders a person vulnerable to being hurt
a. Example: Simeon & Levi killed Hamor & Shechem while they were recovering from circumcision for violating their sister, Dinah (Genesis 34)
3. This was the worst possible time and place to be circumcised (Jericho)
4. God was on their side
D. Gilgal represents the place of healing
1. The people camped in Gilgal until they were healed
E. Gilgal represents the rolling away of the reproach of Egypt (the past)
1. They were no longer slaves and wanderers.
2. They were now possessors
F. Gilgal represents the place of covenant renewal
1. Here they kept the Passover for the first time in the promised land
G. Gilgal is a place to establish the king
H. Gilgal represents the place of fruitfulness
1. No more manna. The people began to eat of the fruit of the land
