introduction
David Livingstone an ordained missionary from the 19th century; was born into not very wealthy means. He and had to work at a cotton mill as a young boy. As he grew older through night school and hard work he eventually made his way through medical school. David, died May 1, 1873. He had spent 30 years in Africa trying to make the tribesmen civilized. That is were he devoted his life’s work. When he died it was not simple matter. His devotion was in Africa but he was England. https://mysendoff.com/2011/07/david-livingstones-burial/
The body of David Livingstone was buried in England where he was born, but his heart was buried in the Africa he loved. At the foot of a tall tree in a small African village the natives dug a hole and placed in it the heart of this man who they loved and respected.

Let us take a look at what Paul had to say to Timothy about this
Please Stand in honor and respect of God’s Word
1 Timothy 6:17-21
17 Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.
18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,
19 storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.
20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”—
21 which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith.Grace be with you.
This is not our Home
This is not our Home
Here in verse 17 Paul is not not making a statement about, is it a sin or wrong to be rich our not.
If you remember a couple weeks ago when we looked at verse 6-10 we understood that Paul stated the LOVE of money was the root of all evil not the money itself.
What is Paul saying here then?
He is telling Timothy to teach, (command, charge) those who are rich not to place their hope in the things of this age, (this world, this time)
Even Matthew make mention of “this age” in Matthew 12:32
32 “And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come.
Conceited - thinking high of yourself / elevating yourself about others.
That person that thinks they are better than you. To good to talk to you.
Hope - trust in
Money will not get you into heaven
Money will not do anything for you in eternity.
Paul was trying to get across the false hope of money
If we understand that this world is not our home as it states in Philippians 3:20
20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;
Then we will understand the instruction to not wast your time trying to accumulate something that in the long run will not matter.
fixing hope on uncertainties of riches which can be here today and gone tomorrow
September 11, 2001 better known as 911. This day not only impacted our nation and our feel of security it also impacted the stock market. I work with a lady in the Dallas area while in school that came in to work a few days after the stock market had open back up and she look like she had seen death. In her mind I am sure she did. Because of the crash of the stock market she had lost well over half of her retirement. She had work many hours even to the detriment of her health to store up money for retirement and lost it over night.
The bible even gives a great example of this in Luke 12:16-34
16 And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a certain rich man was very productive.
17 “And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’
18 “And he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
19 ‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’
21 “So is the man who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
22 And He said to His disciples, “For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, as to what you shall eat; nor for your body, as to what you shall put on.
23 “For life is more than food, and the body than clothing.
24 “Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; and they have no storeroom nor barn; and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds!
25 “And which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit to his life’s span?
26 “If then you cannot do even a very little thing, why are you anxious about other matters?
27 “Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory did not clothe himself like one of these.
28 “But if God so arrays the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you, O men of little faith!
29 “And do not seek what you shall eat, and what you shall drink, and do not keep worrying.
30 “For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things.
31 “But seek for His kingdom, and these things shall be added to you.
32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.
33 “Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves purses which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near, nor moth destroys.
34 “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
3. What must we fix our hope on then?
God -
God can supply
James (the half brother of Jesus) writes about gifts in James 1:17
Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow.
