Introduction
We’ve been working through John and we are wrapping up which is a conversation between the religious leaders and Jesus
Conversations are important.
Sometimes conversations are dangerous
We are going to see today that a conversation with religious leaders almost got Jesus killed.
Is it no wonder that religious people were trying to kill Jesus?
What would we do?
What would we do if Jesus came to our church today?
What would we do if Jesus came in with a homeless person?
What would we do if Jesus came in with people that don’t look like us, smell like us, talk like us?
What would we do if Jesus walked in with a gang member?
What would we do if Jesus walked in with a transgendered person?
Jesus wrecked the worldview of religious leaders.
If I had to bet we would want to kill Jesus too.
He would push us so far out of our comfort zone that we would have no other choice but to kill him.
Think about that.
Jesus was always putting the pressure on the religious people. He didn’t come to save the righteous but to save the lost.
I need Jesus to hang on that cross so that my sins can be forgiven.
I need Jesus to pay my debt with His life.
I need Jesus to go in the grave to beat death.
I need Jesus more today than I did yesterday.
Let’s look at a conversation that Jesus had with the religious leaders that caused them to want to kill Him.
Stand if you are able.
John 8:30-59
John 8:30–59 NASB95
30 As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him. 31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. 36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 “I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father.” 39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40 “But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. 41 “You are doing the deeds of your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me. 43 “Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word. 44 “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 “But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 “Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 “He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.” 48 The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 “But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.” 52 The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste of death.’ 53 “Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be? 54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word. 56 “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” 59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
John 8:
Let’s Pray
Jesus Saying #1
John 8:31-32
John 8:31–32 NASB95
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
John 8:32–33 NASB95
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”
Do you know the truth?
Do you know the truth that will set you free?
We can be set free from sin
Key #1 - Free From Sin
There is freedom with Jesus
Not a freedom to sin
But a freedom not to sin
We are free from the bondage of sin
Do you want that freedom today?
Do you want to be free from sin?
Key #2
John 8:36
John 8:36 NASB95
36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
Jesus is calling us today to again be set free
Free from sin - we can be free indeed
Do you want that freedom today?
Key #1 - Free From Sin
Jesus Response #2
John 8:34-38
Key #2 - You will be free indeed
John 8:34–38 NASB95
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. 36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 “I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father.”
Don’t you want that freedom
Don’t you want to be free from your sin
This is quite an indictment
Free from the guilt
Free from the shame
You can be freed - Listen to Jesus’ words today
Key #3
John 8:42-47
John 8:42–47 NASB95
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me. 47 “He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”
Key #1 - Free From Sin
Key #2 - You will be free indeed
Key #3 - Your Father is Important
There are only two options
God is your Father
Devil is your father
That’s it - Jesus makes the accusation that the religious leaders father is the devil - they were trying to kill Jesus
They were listening to the father of lies
What are your desires?
Are your desires to love, share the love of Jesus, love your enemy?
Are your desires to hate, be filled with anger, lie?
Who is your father?
God or the Devil?
How do you know?
John 8:47
John 8:47 NASB95
47 “He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”

Key #4
John 8:51
John 8:51 NASB95
51 “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.”
Key #1 - Free From Sin
Key #2 - You will be free indeed
Key #3 - Your Father is Important
Key #4 - Be born twice, die once.
John 3:7
John 3:7 NASB95
7 “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
There are two options in this life.
We can be born twice, and die once.
Or be born once and die twice.
Everyone of us has an appointment with death.
2017 has certainly showed us that - I have conducted 7 funerals so far this year.
12 funerals in the last two years.
Each of us will die once.
The question is will we die twice.
We can have eternal life if we believe in Jesus
Or we can die a second death and be eternally separated from God
Key #5
#5
John 8:58-59
John 8:58–59 NASB95
58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” 59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
Key #5 Jesus is the I AM!
Key #1 - Free From Sin
Key #2 - You will be free indeed
Key #3 - Your Father is Important
Key #4 - Be born twice, die once.
Key #5 - Jesus is the I AM!
The Jews wanted to stone Jesus because He claimed to be God
Claiming to be before Abraham and claiming to be the I AM! led the Jews to want to kill Jesus
Conclusion
What is your choice today?
Do you want to follow Jesus?
Or do you want to stone Jesus?
Do you want your Father to be God
Or do you want your father to be the devil?
You have a choice to make - what is your choice?
