The Promised Land

God promised Abraham that his descendants would have a place where they would expand their boarders and have and land with an overflow of blessing
Then he reminded his son Isaac
He reminded Jacob
Then He tells Moses
Exodus 23:20–25 ESV
“Behold, I send an angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. Pay careful attention to him and obey his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, for my name is in him. “But if you carefully obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. “When my angel goes before you and brings you to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, and I blot them out, you shall not bow down to their gods nor serve them, nor do as they do, but you shall utterly overthrow them and break their pillars in pieces. You shall serve the Lord your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you.
The Promise is not where you are right now but where you are going
Exodus 23:20 ESV
“Behold, I send an angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared.
when we look for heaven on earth we will become disappointed
God needed to remind them while they were on the journey because they were so quick to become disheartened
grow tired
get scared
lose sight
Jesus has given us a Promised Land as well
John 14:1–4 ESV
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”
John 14:
We aren’t there yet
The Promise isn’t where you are but where you are going
What will it be like?
Revelation 7:13–17 ESV
Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
Rev 7:
Revelation 21:4–7 ESV
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
If we are looking for heaven on earth then we will be greatly disappointed
because there is nothing like the Promise but the promise itself!
because this life is full of trouble
I don’t see any earthly man who had the trouble as Job
everything taken from him and left with nothing
friends turned back on him
family died
lost all that he had
Job 5:6–11 ESV
For affliction does not come from the dust, nor does trouble sprout from the ground, but man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward. “As for me, I would seek God, and to God would I commit my cause, who does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number: he gives rain on the earth and sends waters on the fields; he sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
Job 5:6-
Sometimes we don’t have to find trouble because trouble has already found us
generational curse through sin
sin of those around us in this fallen world
bad choices with never-ending consequences
one wrong turn to another
consequences of fallen world
grief
pain
sickness
heartache
If we are looking for heaven on earth then we will be greatly disappointed
because this life is full of trouble
If we are looking for heaven on earth then we will be greatly disappointed
because sin lies that it can satisfy
Ecclesiastes 5:10 ESV
He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.
pleasure
authority/power
cheat/lie
...
we think that what we want is found in this earth
BUT
the promise is not about where we are but where we are going
are we there yet?
new job
new boyfriend
plan vacation
next high
if only...
Jesus tells us that He is going to prepare a place for us
John 14:5–6 ESV
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:5-6
we were built for heaven
Jesus is the only way to heaven
therefore Jesus will be the only thing on this earth that can satisfy
What I have found to be truth :
God is the Creator and ruler of the universe
Jesus is the Son of God
The Holy Spirit lives to help make people aware of their need for Jesus
and He lives in each Christian from Salvation
Bible is God’s Word to us
People are the supreme object of God’s creation
Salvation is God’s free gift to us, BUT we must accept it
People will exist eternally with or without God
heaven and hell
When we give our lives to Christ unto Salvation
die to our old ways and that we are given new life
when we are baptized that it represents the work of Jesus’ death, burial, & resurrection and serves as a reminder of the implications that that has on our lives
If you would like to join me in this journey to the Promised Land and accept the free gift of Jesus
I will invite you to come and pray
Romans 10:9–10 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
3 couples to pray with you
Bold enough to step out and say I will start this journey because I know that I’m not their yet but I want to go there
For those who are on this journey but feel bogged down or like your losing course
Colossians 3:1–7 ESV
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.
Col 3:
2 Corinthians 4:18 ESV
as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
