Flee From Idolatry

Pastor Keith Hassell

Foundation Scripture:  Deuteronomy 18:9-14

I.       God has called us out from the world as His special people

A.      I Peter 2:9  “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

B.      God called Abraham out of the idolatry of Ur, Israel out of the idolatry of Egypt, and Christians out of the idolatry of this world.

C.      We are living in a culture that has the mixture of Christianity and paganism (Halloween, psychics, horoscopes, occultic games, movies, jewelry and clothing, etc.)

II.      God is calling us into an inheritance

          A.      Israel was to inherit the promised land

B.      Christians are inheriting the Kingdom of God, not this world with all of its corruptions

III.     We are not to involve ourselves in idolatrous practices

          A.      Sacrifices to other gods (satanic or pagan)

          B.      Witchcraft (white or black)

          C.      Soothsaying (foretelling the future)

D.      Interpreter of omens (palm reading, tea leaves, tarot cards, handwriting analysis, astrology, horoscopes, ESP, etc.)

          E.      Sorcery (wizardry, magic, levitation, etc.)

          F.      Conjures spells (incantations, curses, spells, etc.)

G.      Medium (channeling communication with spirits, Ouija boards, automatic handwriting, etc.)

H.      Spiritism (communicating with the dead, seances)

I.       Modern occultic entertainment:  board games (dungeons and dragons, ouija boards, etc.), video games, computer games, books (Harry Potter, etc.), movies (beginning with so called “innocent” childhood movies, music, experimentation at slumber parties, etc.

J.       Pagan and occultic jewelry, clothing, or artifacts:  (peace sign, ying yang, ank, crucifix, serpents, skulls, owls, dragons, scorpions, stars and crescent moons, ritual masks, pagan art, and other symbols)

IV.     Those who practice such things are an abomination to the Lord

A.      I Corinthians 10:19-22 (NKJV) “What am I saying them?  That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything?  Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.  You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.  Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy?  Are we stronger than He?”

B.      When we participate with idolatrous practices we open the door for FELLOWSHIP with demons

C.      When we defend anything in our lives associated with idolatry, we come into AGREEMENT with demons.

V.      These abominations are what cause God to destroy the peoples of the land

VI.     We are to be blameless (perfect) before the Lord our God

A.      2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1 (NKJV) “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.  For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness?  And what communion has light with darkness?  And what accord has Christ with Belial (lawless one)?  Or what part (inheritance) has a believer with an unbeliever?  And what agreement has the temple of God with idols?  For you are the temple of the living God.  As God has said, ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them.  I will be their God, and they shall be My people.’  Therefore ‘Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord.  Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.  I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.’  Therefore having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

VII.    What shall we do?

A.      Repent and renounce any involvement or agreement with idolatrous practices

B.      Separate yourself from things associated with idolatry (“Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord.  Do not touch what is unclean.”)

1.       Remove, burn and destroy all items associated with idolatry, sin, and the flesh (Having them maintains the fellowship)

          C.      Believe God’s promises and embrace your inheritance in Christ

D.      Perfect holiness in the fear of God
