The basis of this chart is found in 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (NKJV):
- Gifts (v. 4): (Grace or Motivational Gifts) “There are diversities of gifts (charismaton, singular charisma), but the same Spirit”
- Gifts are measures of the manifold grace of God (1 Peter 4:10) distributed among each of us by the Holy Spirit when we are born again. The specific gift given to us will be made manifest by the inward desire and ability to do His will (Philippians 2:13).
- Ministries (v. 5): (Ministry Gifts) “There are differences of ministries (diakinon, singular diakonia), but the same Lord.” (v. 5)
- Ministries are areas of service or areas of calling within the body that are appointed by the Head of the Church, the Lord Jesus Christ
- Activities (v. 6): “And there are diversities of activities (energematon, singular energema), but it is the same God who works all in all.”
- Also translated as “operations” and “workings.” God works in various ways in various people in various places at various times to bring about His eternal purpose.
- Manifestations (v. 7): “But the manifestation (phanerosis) of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.”
- Manifestations are given to “each one for the profit of all.” Unlike the gifts, these “manifestations” of God’s supernatural activity flow “as the Spirit wills” through whomever He chooses for the benefit of others
- Unity of the Godhead (Trinity): God the Father is working His eternal purpose through the church. The Son, Jesus Christ, calls His servants into specific ministries to carry out His Father’s purpose. The Holy Spirit distributes gifts of grace needed to fulfill these ministries. In times of human limitation, manifestations of the supernatural power of God are given “as the Spirit wills” to individuals of His choice for the profit of all.
