I am Free!

Pastor Keith Hassell

Foundation Scripture:       Philippians 3:12-16

I.          I am free from the sins of the past

A.        Jeremiah 31:34  “No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

B.        Hebrews 8:12  For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

II.        I am free from the law as the basis of my righteousness

A.        Romans 8:2-4  “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.’

III.       I am free from the old slave master of sin

A.        Romans 6:6-7 “knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7For he who has died has been freed from sin.”

IV.       I am free from the power of death

A.        1 Corinthians 15:54-57 “So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’  ‘O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?’  The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

V.        I am free from the power of the grave

            A.        1 Corinthians 15:54-57

B.        1 Thessalonians 4:13-18  “But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.”

VI.       I am free from the power of hell

A.        Revelation 1:18  “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.”

VII.     I am free to forgive those who hurt me in the past

            A.        Matthew 18:21-35  Parable of the unforgiving servant

VIII.    I am free from my past failures

            A.        In Christ, my past is past at last

            B.        In Christ, my past

IX.       I am free from the old identity

            A.        My testimony is my past but it is not my identity.

B.        2 Corinthians 5:17  “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

X.        I am free to pursue an intimate relationship with God

A.        2 Corinthians 5:18  “Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ…”

XI.       I am free to think as one who is free

            A.        Romans 6:7  “For he who has died has been freed from sin.”

B.        John 8:36  “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

XII.     I am free to look forward

            A.        A person who is free isn’t looking in the rear view mirror

B.        A person who is free is able to focus on the future rather than to wallow in the past

XIII.    I am free to run for the goal to obtain the prize

            A.        My destiny in God

B.        Verse 12:  “that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.”

C.        Verse 14  “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

D.        The prize is the reward
