“All In”
“All In”
I hope and pray that you are excited to be in the house of the Lord this morning. Do you come this morning expecting? Do you come this morning expecting to hear from God? Do you come expecting for the Holy Spirit to stir your heart? We are in our second week of a sermon series called “All In”. Let me ask you a question this morning… If God asked you to do something would you willing obey Him? If God asked you to sacrifice something that you loved with all of your heart, would you be willing to give it to God as a sacrificial offering?
This morning we are going to look at one of the most unforgettable stories in all scripture. If you have your Bible with you please turn with me to .
Dinner was warm. The house was tidy. The table was set. And there we sat in the living room, waiting for our guest to arrive. But they never came. Isn’t it disappointing when people do not keep their word? I think it would be safe to say that we all have had that happen to us at one time or another. And a lot of the time when that does happen we can become bitter and angry and take the attitude that, “if you want something done, you have to do it yourself.” Sometimes these attitudes can begin to color the way that we relate to God. We might say to ourselves, maybe God won’t keep his word. We fear making too radical a commitment and take matters into our own hands.

“The Lord kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised. 2 She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the time God had said it would.” So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken to him.” Isn’t that good to hear? It had been a long time coming, but God had not forgotten his promise to Sarah.

God always does what he says he will do. He is not like us, forgetting, overlooking, and ignoring his commitments. Nor is he, like us, sometimes willing to fulfill his commitments, but unable to do so. He never runs out of time. He never gets sick, or has an unexpected scheduling conflict. And he never lacks the strength to do what he says he will do—even if the task is as tall as giving a baby to a ninety-year-old woman or raising his Son from the dead! Nothing is too hard for the Lord! And the Lord always does “as He had said.”
Within this passage we see tremendous tension because how could a loving God even ask what he commanded Abraham to do?
Genesis 21:3-6
3 And Abraham named their son Isaac. 4 Eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham circumcised him as God had commanded. 5 Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born.
6 And Sarah declared, “God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me. 7 Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a son in his old age!”
