Does Jesus Really Understand - Lesson 3

John 8:1 ESV
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
John 8:1–8 ESV
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground.

Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

John
(The Scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery.)
Scribe: expert teacher in the Law, a Scribe, usually named with other leading and conservative groups in the Jewish social and religious life.
Pharisee: a powerful religious and political group of people who interpreted the Jewish law. Their name stands for “the separate ones.” From the synagogue, they studied, focused on the schooling of children and did missionary work to spread the word of God.
Being a scribe was a profession, one recognized and valued in most ancient world states. It meant being able to take part administratively in all aspects of government and still be able to perform tasks for the common people. Pharisees, on the other hand, were an elite group of priests who also had command of written texts and who interpreted and imposed them.
Caught!!!
Adultery: Always refers to the sexual sin of married people with someone other than their spouse, and the word is used in the Old Testament both literally and figuratively. The Hebrew word translated “adultery” means literally “breaking wedlock.”
(And placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery.”)
Where did they place her?
Describe what you see in this text and the emotion that you feel.
(“Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” )
Teacher? You know they didn’t respect him…
Wow, what a question.
This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him.
Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.
And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”
By His answer He spares her and yet does not violate the Law. He lets them make the point for Him (v 9).
And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground.
This no doubt alludes to Moses receiving the tablets of stone written with God’s own finger on Mount Sinai (). Moses broke the tablets and the Lord again wrote them with His finger (; ).

This no doubt alludes to Moses receiving the tablets of stone written with God’s own finger on Mount Sinai (). Moses broke the tablets and the Lord again wrote them with His finger (; ).
As Jesus is being tested about the Law of Moses, He writes on the ground with His finger. The only two places that mention God writing with His finger are here and Mount Sinai. Jesus is identifying Himself as the Lawgiver.
John’s unbelieving readers should grasp Jesus’ claim to be the One who gave Moses the Law in the first place.
John 8:9–11 ESV
But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
The Grace New Testament Commentary 4. Jesus’ Encounter with the Woman Caught in Adultery (7:53–8:11)

Jesus’ initial response is puzzling: Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger. (The words as though He did not hear are not found in the MT or CT.)

This no doubt alludes to Moses receiving the tablets of stone written with God’s own finger on Mount Sinai (Exod 31:18). Moses broke the tablets and the Lord again wrote them with His finger (Exod 32:19; 34:1).

As Jesus is being tested about the Law of Moses, He writes on the ground with His finger. The only two places that mention God writing with His finger are here and Mount Sinai. Jesus is identifying Himself as the Lawgiver.

8:7. Jesus’ answer is amazing: “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” By His answer He spares her and yet does not violate the Law. He lets them make the point for Him (v 9).

8:8. Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Just as He had twice written the Law on the two tablets with His finger, now He writes on the ground a second time with His finger. During this writing the woman’s accusers were convicted (v 9). John’s unbelieving readers should grasp Jesus’ claim to be the One who gave Moses the Law in the first place.

But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones,
Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.
